Black SeaBass in our (near) future

Can we get an update from those of you “in the know” on the possibility of re-opening Black Sea Bass? Is anything being considered by NOAA? Thanks

  1. assesment upadate of BSB stock by SEDAR in March

  2. review by SSC in April or May

  3. Season opens up again June 1st 2013

  4. SAFMC meeting in June will determine outcome for future seasons

A lot hinging on the new assesment, not much to tell other than that!

Just to re-iterate what Mark said. Essentially the season opens up every year on June 1rst and when they determine that the Annual Catch Limit has been met, they will close it again until the next June 1rst.

Here is a good summary of the federal regulations that is updated every time there is a change. Just download this before each trip and you should be okay:

June 1, 2013 opening and then an administrative closure for the fishing year (until the next June) again in Aug/Sept, 2013 would be my guess.

C bass will not be opened for long next year since they’re going to take the “overage” from this year right off the top of next year’s total allowable catch.

Unfortunately, the nightmare will become worse before it gets better. We are in the last half of the BSB 10-year rebuilding plan, but the feds have changed the numbers in their model to clamp down even harder on the fishery. DNR and other state agencies see and understand the truth, but the federal law does nothing to force the federal managers to use the most current data if they deem it inadequate or flawed. Funding for MARMAP to show what’s really going on out there right now has also been slashed and money instead dumped into catch shares brainwashing and other govt command and control rip offs…

Magnuson-Stevens was reauthorized in 2006 with rigid timeframes and broad discretion for the feds to determine what best available data to use in their decisions. Hopefully certain people and groups will not be as arrogant when this federal law comes up for reauthorization again before 2016.

It passed in the Senate via unanimous consent (no roll call) as Senator Stevens was on the way out, and this was some of his legacy legislation. Bush II then signed the bill and put out a presser to congratulate everyone on the biggest piece of marine conservation legislation ever passed. The CCA and Texas folks close to Bush believed this last reauthorization would stop kicking the can down the road because of its rigid timeframe requirements.

The serious problems came in when the current administration chose to utterly defund the science and data collection and instead focus quite obviously on command and control policies like catch shares and cap in trade where the government finds a way to rip us off via our own public resources and artificial market manipulation by federal environmental regulators.

thanks Phineas

I called the SAMFC office a month ago and one question I asked was what was the overage deduction going to be going into next year and they did not have the numbers yet…but they knew enough to close the season as the ACL had been met…really??? …or exceeded by some yet to be determined numbers.

Really sucks!
