Had visitors from maine and new hampshire this weekend.
they really wanted to offshore fish. The weekend weather
was not good but i spotted a target of oportunity on Monday 1 Nov
If we went out really early and came back early.
they were in and we left Gt marina at 0300 headed for the GT hole in the dark. Arrived there at 0630 not a bad ride out.
sun came up and the tuna came with it. Birds showed us where and we were covered up with doubles and triples. Nice footballs 15-20lbs. 6 of which we put in the box. All we wanted out of about 15 boatside. Turned off as quick as it turned on, then we lost a nice wahoo to a mono leader. Wandered off for some deep drops and scored some really large red porgy, triggers to include a really pretty queen. Drifted into some weeds and I started throwing a popper out of curiosty while they dropped deep. A large whahoo came up to investigate it. didn’t hit but i convinced the guys it might be worth trolling this rip for whahoo for a little while. Put out only two lines with wire leaders this time and ten minutes later one of them is singing. Good runs and fight but old tiger sides came unglued much to the rookie offshore fishermans shagrin. Winds and seas were coming up from the north as predicted so we headed into what should have been a trailing sea but became starbord quatering and bumpy ride home. feet dry at 3pm and a good day had by all.
nice report, glad you got to show your company a good time.
Jeff
Nice catch! You driving from Manning in the morning or do you have a place in GT. Leaving at 3 with the car ride makes for a LONG day. I say this from lots of experience. ![]()
Set the trap boys, we going to pass through them again!!
THINK GT LANDING ABOUT ONE HOUR NOT THAT FAR WHEN U DRIVE FOUR HOURS MIN IN THE WATER

2.5 hours from the upstate to mannning, 1 hour from manning to GT, 2 hours to the hole. It all adds up quickly. Manning is just far enough to be a pain to drive but just close enough that it is not always worth getting a hotel room.

ya thats right about an hr and ten minutes from home to the boat.
I have stayed at Gt marina when i plan on going early or a tourney there. I don’t often get out that early however as my wife isn’t a big fan of getting up at 0230 or of running in the dark. So its usually a guys only trip and it payed off this time. My guests thought i was a fishing genius as we cruised for three hrs in the dark out to sea. pulled up put lines out and had 5 lines go down with blackfin tuna 100m from where i stopped. They couldn’t believe it. I didn’t bother to tell them all the about radar and chart plotters auto pilot and the fact that GT hole is probably one of the most fished spots in this area. And the fact there were birds working that the spot always worth checking out. I got lucky and i let them believe i knew exactly what i was doing.
If my wife had gone i wouldn’t of had a bite till 1000 and she would say why did we get up so early again. Wish we could have boated the wahoo but thats fishing.
