The best way to catch small blackfin busting the surface. Saw a bunch of like 1to3lbers and some schools of 5to10lbs. None hit what we were pulling.
What were you pulling? Wahoo baits?

Yeah for the most part and tried for about an hour with ballys but not on anything super stealthy still on heavy gear. That was at 1 with bright skies and flat calm water and the bite was dead from what we experienced and heard. We had a few pecs on the baits when we pulled them in but they weren’t noticeable when trolling. Also saw some schools of fish I couldn’t tell what they were. Kind of like a stretched out looking trigger fish or maybe an unpuffed puffer fish with a brown tan color and maybe a darker marking by the face probably close to 18inches in length. I don’t think they were either of those but that’s the best way I could think to paint a good mental picture.
It sounds like you have an idea of what you would do differently next time.
I wouldn’t feel too bad. It sounded like a slow day in general

Lord I bet a 1 lb BFT would be a great Marlin bait.
Cedar plugs.

Rig up the Jr size cedar plugs on a light mono leader…send wtfb…repeat as necessary. Just what has worked for us for a couple decades. good luck.
If have a small spinning reel setup rig on a 1-2oz gotcha and have some fun.
Long Flouro leader, and cedar plugs or some sort of feather bait’s pulled way back.
