Blown E-Tec

After a mere 400 hours, my 200 E-Tec on my Ranger Cayman 191 bit the dust last Saturday during a bass tournament. It threw a rod through the block causing catastrophic failure. I got the boat/motor/trailer for a heck of a deal, and I babied it compared to my knock-around Tidewater/F90 setup with over 1200 hours already, but it gave up sadly. Both motors are 06 models. I will NEVER purchase anything but 4-stroke Yamahas from now until. Believe all the hype if you want. More power, lighter, holeshot is WORTHLESS if it won’t last IMO. Next time you’ll see the red Ranger, it will have a F200 on the back. Sorry. Rant over, but motor blowing up after servicing at 250 hrs. (300 recommended), and following all maintenance guidelines is rediculous!

Wow! That sucks!

Ouch! Sorry to hear that! Hope you get going soon. Had a friend that blew a couple of ETECs with less than 75 hrs. He did say, they had an excellent warranty. My 200 VMAX HPDI blew @ 265 hrs. I was the second owner, and believe it had problem when I purchased it. My Hewes Redfisher had a Yamaha F150 with over 800 hrs, without a problem.

sorry Rad

That new inline 4cyl F200 is a sweet engine but looks like its going to cost you about 70lbs. Digital controls are supposed to be out soon.

I have a used Honda 1997 BF50 that the hour meter rusted away at 2961 hrs! Have had 5 Evinrude/Johnsons that were nothing but trouble.

Thats horrible. I never had an etech but the other 2 strokes were junk. Have an f250 an full of smiles

Yeah, My 50 hp etec blew up couple of months out of warranty. Whenever I see one at the landing I ask the owner if he bought the extended warranty. Always tell em I wish I had. 4 stroke yammies from here on out.

Not ETEC but my OMC 150 2 strokes were garbage. Blew power head after power head. Finally scrapped them and went with Suzuki 225s. They came with a 6 year warrantee and have been incredibly reliable so far,not to mention quieter.

You can put the ETECs in that category as well. After all the ■■■■■■■■ I have received from former pro staff members and PMs on this site, ETECs have had and still have major issues with producing motors that last.

If it makes ya feel better my blew at 178hrs…the engine still looked brand new enside and out…sad, sad day it was…2 years OUT of warranty.

Thanks, clfried. This post should serve as a warning to all interested in purchasing any E-Tec motor. Buyer beware. If you’ve got more money than you need, go ahead and take the risk. Otherwise, don’t take the chance.

All motors have there issues. I have the yammies that had the corrsion issue in the exhaust port. Cost me 4k…That being said Yammies are the way to go.

This is what I don’t understand. Car manufactures consistently have recalls which are well out of their warranty period and they cover the cost. You would think that a company as big Bombardier would step up and offer some type of assistance. However, I was looking at a smaller boat for my son to use and it had a 25hp ETEC on it. No way now!!! Ron you need to post on thehulltruth.com. That few hours is asbolute BS!!!

The only Yamaha I have heard with corrosion issues was the F225. I have the F250 with just under 2700 hrs and it still runs fine.

4K sounds pretty good to me right now.

No doubt. I had to bite the bullet and purchase a used 07 yamaha f250 with 800 hours and 14 months left on warranty and it cost 9k. I was done using and believing in Evinrude, this was the second one i had lost, and countless times had issues with their products. I feel like a huge sucker for giving evinrude a second chance. No mas!!

I then went to war with Evinrude ( and still am) because the failure was all due to the fact that during its manafacturing they failed to “lock-tight” those tiny gold screws that hold the reeds to the reed block…so what happpened? They vibrated loose (because they werent glued) the reeds then were injected into the engine block where the metal reeds were shredded, tossed around like marbles in a blinder and transformed into schratnel before they ripped back through the engine block causing 4 huge holes and blowing up the engine…

Point and lesson to be learned? If you are considering buying an Evinrude Engine, simply dont do it, little cheaper in the front, alot more expensive in the rear when they are bending you over. Their product is cheap, its junk, its not worthy of your hull i am sure! Buy a 4 stroke yammy and listen and love that sound. The simple humm of the engine and that distinctive roar when its fired (every time!) makes me wonder why i ever gave Evinrude any chance…Stupid me, live and learn.

Redstripe, What signs or symptoms did your motor have that led you to the fact of the corrosion issue? I too have a 2003 f225 and I know that has been an issue with that motor. I just replaced the cranckshaft seal and oil pump on my starbord motor and now waiting to see signs to do the port.
