A memorial day crab boil sounds good. Are the crabs rusty?

Are they Number 1 males??

For $11.99 ? No, they are mixed, small males and females. #1’s are $15.99 dz. Crabs are all Cooper river crabs and pretty rusty.

Lucky to have crabs for the weekend as I hear they aren’t filing well most places…and a lot of “white crabs” are caught and sold by some of the crabbers…and everyone knows white crabs are poor. Daddy worked 54 pots yesterday for two bushels and a couple pounds… Number ones are 65.00 to the boat for the holiday weekend…not sure what females are. ( two slabs of bait = 56.oo then add in gas). Daddy culls his hard…no white ones in his baskets…well over the minimum width and the top is hard to close. I asked I once…after seeing some of the other people’s baskets why he still does this and he says…I work hard to catch them…and the folks that buy them usually
Work hard to pay for them. His get shipped to Maryland most times…
Paul …ya ll selling stone crab claws? They seem to be plentiful this year.

Penny, most of my crabs are sold to people that pay with EBT. I will take all the Stones I can get. Been selling them for $7.99 when I can get them. My crabber got hit today, ALL of his pots were run, and they even dumped the bait. The crab wars on the Cooper are real bad!

Thats sad stuff to hear. Whore business sometimes I’m sure. I can’t imagine what a man would do if he caught another doing that.

Pardon the ignorance, but sometimes I see similar pot buoys (like all red colored) and other buoys (all blue colored) near each other. Is that somebody trying to steal another’s spots and/or run each others pots?

Every crabber has a certain color and assigned number… My dads are orange and blue with k15 on them… When you see pots close together like that someone is squeezing someone…we have them do it to daddy sometimes…most guys who work together and know each other won’t crowd each other out …out of -towners sometimes don’t care…he occasionally has people empty his…and goes through times when pots disappear which hurts when pots are around 60.00 each rigged out…cutting them is even worse as the crabs die…sometimes pots move and “roll up” or get caught in their own line as they roll with the current ESP. On big tides…most of the time these will show back up on a low tide… Peeler season seems to be the worst time for thievery in the village…I do hear that the cooper and wando are bad for thief’s though…and that’s sad. Someone will get hurt one day by someone else who is just fed up. I hate a thief!!! People can have two personal crab pots but they must have a yellow bouy with their name and address on them.
People get really frustrated with crabbers and pot placement …but what they don’t realize is that if pots are out n the middle of a channel they more than likely drifted there with currents and tides…as most crabbers try to run along the side of channel…deep enough. Not to be left high and dry which is against regulations…but also out of the way as not to get run over. No man would want to sabotage his own gear I’m sure. Paul. We pulled a pot last week that had eleven stone crabs in it! Yep…I said ohhh poor poor mr Stoney crab…haha…some were too small…a couple only had one claw…so they got a free pass…the others are now one armed bandits…

Remember folks…

Blue crabs must be five inches minimum…can’t have ones with eggs… Peelers have no size limit…

Stone crabs must have two claws with larger one the only one that can be taken…must leave one!..claw must be minimum. 2 -3/4 inch forearm…illegal to posess body of one…dead

always good info Penny. Thanks!

I was picking oysters in the Folly area several months ago. I noticed ‘fiddlers’ underneath the clusters. After I grabbed a few and put them in a bucket for bait, I realized they were Stone Crabs, I put them back right away, but was surprised to see how many there were. Ran across 20 or so in the 2 bushels I picked. Is it normal to have a bunch of these under the clusters or did I find breeding area?
