Blue headed monster!

Went back after the elusive Tom this morning, got there extra early as to get to the pond dam where I heard them gobbling last week. Standing on the pond dam watching the sky turn blue I hear thunder coming from the head of the pond. Sounded like he was on the creek bottom so I ease around the pond and set up maybe 150 yards from where he is. This bird is fired up gobbling like crazy almost every Breath. He hits the ground and it’s silence, I’m thinking here we go again just like last week. After a few sweet purrs on the slate thunder rolls again. The only problem is he is up on the ridge and I am on the creek bottom. Not a huge deal I ease down the side of the pond and turn to go up the hill, well, he had moved a considerable distance and was just at the top of the hill. So I jumped into a spot by a tree and this bird is still fired up, just lighting the woods up. I settle in and start purring at him and he is coming at a high rate of speed. Then I see the bright blue head pop over the hill, adrenaline starts pumping gun starts shaking and he let’s it roll again. At this point he is maybe 65 yards away and he is a big bird, like 20+ pounds. I ease the safety off and… Clang bam… My uncle decide he is going fishing in the aluminum John boat that is kept upside down just across the pond from where I am. The blue headed monster runs back over the hill and game over. Oh well maybe next time. Hope other had better luck than me this morning.

Tried to hunt an old silent bird this morning in the WMA and apparently I didn’t get the memo because just about time the birds show up as a complete ■■■■■, a logging crew fires up that had came in from the opposite side of the tract…eye yigh yigh!!! I don’t think this year is gonna be an easy season for some of us. Try try try again and hope you push that boat out before you set up next time.

Just sent the boss an email stating that I would be in a little late on Monday. Hopefully head back over there and get him. I will just make sure that my uncle will not be fishing, and I’m not sold that it was the noise so much. It’s kind of thin on the side of the hill and I believe he could have seen my uncle in the act, but who really knows.
