Blue Marlin at the Edisto Banks

Fished yesterday with the owner Lee Jernigan, family and friends. Started south with The Deli in mind but eased off about 20 degrees to the east to get a little better ride in the bumpy morning. Put the high speed gear in at 90 feet with no results and the regular spread in at 150ft after pulling back.

Picked at nice gaffer dolphin between 200 and 300 ft all morning just south of the Edisto Banks. It was a good day with all of Lee’s children and their friends getting to pull on some decent sized dolphin. Lee also had his cousin Keith with us who had never been offshore before.

A nice day turned into a great day when a blue marlin CRASHED our spread just after lunch. He came out of nowhere greyhounding into the right short rigger. He pulled that one into the Black Bart running just behind the bubble trail and then finally hooked up on the left short rigger and started stripping line like a banshee. We cleared the deck and settled in for a good tug of war after he sounded. Eventually worked him to the side of the boat for pictures and a clean release. First marlin for me but I would estimate him to be small, maybe 150-200lbs.

The quote of the day comes from the man on the rod, Keith: “This sure beats the hell out of striper fishing at the lake!”

First marlin for the boat.
First marlin for the entire crew except for two friends.
First marlin and first offshore trip for the rod man Keith.

Oh yeh, we caught 9 nice dolphin too and I think we need to buy a marlin flag.

Lee sent me a text… sounded pretty excited. You say there’s pictures??? Show them or email them to me. Hope to fish with you boys soon.

Pictures will get up soon and also a link to some video when we get it all put together.

Springtide has a harder time getting a kitchen pass than I would getting a Visa to fish in Cuba.

Stand firm, be brave and keep the men at it.

You say he wasn’t a big one but rest assured there were a lot of sportys that passed us at the georgetown hole sat… I suspected they were in the tournament at gt and looking for a marlin…I’m sure they would have loved to have a shot at it. Nicely done. Congrats to the boat crew and angler!
