I’m a little confused. I used to be under thye impression that during the summer months the herring had to hang out along the thermocline to survive & that they were usually in the 40-60 depths this time of year. However I have seen schools of them lately in a cove on Shull Island, right up on the bank. Is that unusual for this time of year?
Also I was wondering if I were to catch some with a cast net, put them in my insulated herring tank & gradually cool down the water, would they stay alive is dropped down to the striper depths of 40-60 feet? Any ideas?
I have been filling my tank up with the 65* water from the river and dumping them right in it. They are livelier than any bait you could buy. I went out Friday night and we ended up jumping in to cool off. the water felt about 10 degrees cooler just a couple feet down. The surface was 87, but back on June 16th I was reading surface temps of 78.

Probably white perch. B:wink:ut what do I know…never caught a stiper:wink:
You should try it sometime…but you will need to buy you some plugs to troll with or some herring as that is the ONLY way it is possible to catch a striped bass.

I know what Megalops is because it’s Liz’s FAVORITE gamefish of ALL time … I almost lost her in Boca Grande pass to a 130 pounder that almost took her off the boat when it hit the first run … Since then she much prefers the 50 - 90 pound variety …

Which bridge? The highway bridge or the old Railroad bridge?
There’s underwater cameras set up under the old railroad bridge … you can watch all the fish in reel (intentional misspelling) time … LOL … http://teens4oceans.org/cam-bahia-honda.htm
Highway bridge. In May I have seen tarpon rolling as far as you could see. At night you can hear the 'poons slurping shrimp around the pilings, and if you have some large live mullet-we, all I can say is HOLD ON.
The web cam wasn’t working when I pulled up the site but I will check back-thanks for the link.
About PRS-No, the numbers aren’t anything like south Florida, but in July & August the poon fishing can be pretty good if you know where/when to go. Their movements are pretty predictable-and the average size is about 90 pounds.

@Tommy - yeah, we did … how are things going on the Coast?? I saw where justin picked up a trophy on one of the fishing shows in Louisiana… great job …
@Megalops … Liz caught TWO BAP’s … both permit are pictured …
We also went gigging for Sheepshead and Flounder in Sebastian Inlet … THAT WAS FUN … we pulled in 25 Sheapshead, 18 Flounder, and we also caught a nice Snook … stayed up all night but it was worth it …
