Bluefish

Any help in fishing for bluefish in the Charleston-Beaufort area would be appreciated. Bait, areas to fish, etc.

Near shore reef, mudminnow, drop it to about half of the water column. They will come up to it.
If you start catching black sea bass, your fishing too deep.

Thanks frio. If going to a reef is not possible how about from the surf or in the harbor?

The Blues are usually in the surf in good numbers in the fall. I’ve caught them on cut bait, shrimp and artificials. If you see a school busting bait in the surf, spoons and Gotcha Plugs will catch them. I think they will generally follow the mullet migration. I remember fishing up in North Myrtle with my brother several years ago in September and we caught all we wanted and then some for most of a week on Hopkins silver spoons.

In the past 3 weekends I’ve caught 6 or 7 blues over 12" long at demetre park on JI, I use cut croaker, shrimp or bluefish (depending on what I caught last time and froze) on double drop, carolina and even sabiki rigs, I’m not fishing for them specifically, but lately I’ve been catching them on most anything I put out.

Thanks to Jack and Electric Bass. Helpful info.

I have anchored on Mt Pleasant side of Castle Pinckney and caught them . Anchor up out of the channel and fish under a float Toss it out on the edge of the channel and keep an eye on it. Plus bottom fishing next to the island could land a flounder, shark or red for you. If you take any kids with you the little sharks will keep the happy.
