Bluefish

Bluefish are hitting everything i throw in the water but won’t take the hook…they keep biting off the back half of my artificials. Any suggestions how to hook one of these turds?

I caught a bunch last weekend on a Gotcha plug.

I guess you can rig plastics like a kingfish rig…treble hook in back and treble up front.

Get a similar bait but made out of the elaztech material (basically anything z man makes) and try that. Should help with the bite off. If that doesn’t work switch to a hard bait or spoon.

I had success using a very sharp 1/0 circle hook baited with a 12 in horse mullet filet. Made sure to set the hook through the thickest part of the filet and threaded the hook again about 75% down towards the tail. Gives the bait some presentation, and allows you to have two strong hook points through the tough mullet skin. On another note I was using 40lb mono leader and broke off 4 before I landed a monster 36 in blue. I switched up to a 60lb nylon coated wire leader with a 4/0 snell hook/cigar float. Haven’t lost a blue since the switch. I caught a few more with a vudu 3.5in mullet that is pre rigged with a razor sharp treble hook.

Where were you fishing (generally speaking)? We were getting hit in thebStono, Wappoo cut and up the Wando. Do ones that big head into the creeks or weee you in Jetties or an offshore reef?

Try to resist setting the hook on the initial take, wait until you feel the weight of the fish.

I have been finding them in the backwaters of Shem Creek. Usually close to
Dusk and on a falling high, but that is just my expirence this year with them. I did not see them this far inshore last year. In my past expirence I have only caught them near wreaks and reefs in Beaufort.

We absolutely destroyed them last year at the jetties. We threw spoons and had even better luck using the ShroomZ jig head(Zman) paired with a SlimZ. It’s a smaller bait so they eat the whole thing instead of biting off pieces.
