Bluewater.......

I’ve been getting ready for the season…

Those look great cali… what are they for? your 4wt? My goal is to get my first red OTF this year… I REALLY want that before summer…

Fresh fish tastes much better than fresh kissed butt…

4 wt…right!
10,12, and 14 and anything from sight casting to dolphin to blind casting with sinking line under the weed line…HOLD ON!!

I’ve never even seen a 10wt in real life  I bet it’s a blast with a dolphin OTF… One day I’ll make it out there  Keep us posted on how you do with those… Speaking of which… did you ever fish that Gonzo I sent you?

i also tied up some large offshore flies that look similar to the one on the right in the 2nd picture. had to go get more hackle after tying them. those look good!

nikon- i fished that gonzo you sent me and hooked a red and caught a flounder. great fly! what kind of hook was it tied on?

strip…strip…FISH ON!

Nikon, I haven’t used it yet b/c I have done very little ishore fishing lately! I will probably wait until summer to use the fly as I usually stick to dark colored baits this time of year.

Calibogue -

I’m going to try for my first bluewater fish OTF this season. I’ll be using my 9wt, as it’s the heaviest I have.

What size leader do you use offshore? Are you tying those flies yourself?

I PETA the fool…

Yes, those are flies that I tied.
For sightcasting to schoolie dolphin I usually use a 20-30# leader w/ 60# shock. If you use a larger rod with sinking line or troll it I would use a 80# shock.
Don’t be afraid to let that fly troll back with the baits down a weedline…it will get clobbered! IGFA whatever…:sunglasses:

FYI, if you have a aggressive school worked up, don’t be afraid to go with a shorter heavier leader system so you can get and keep the fly in strike zoen quicker and longer, I really like the FC materials for this type of loope to loope leader system. If the schoold gets leader shy you can quickly down size to a lighter size and your usually good to go for several more fish. Depending on how light you have to go you may want a bite tippet but if you can get away with anything over 20 or 25 pound test, I’d fish it straight up and take my chances particularly if you are throwing something other than a J hook on your fly. I’d ratehr get a few more bite and loose a fish or two than go the other way. Just make sure that whatever you throw you have something that you can shoot and pick up quick to keep the fly in the fish! It can get pretty wild when you get on a big blitz!

Nice looking Flies. I really like that popper.Nothing better than seeing a fish flush the tolet on a popper! I see ya have a Sage RPLXI. I think its one of the best rods sage has put out. Have you tried the Xi2 series? Ive been thinking about getting a 12 wt Xi2
