I do a slow retrieve with small flicks of the rod tip to give it some action. Paddle tails create a lot of drag and if you reel them too fast they will rise in the water column. I’m guilty of that sometimes, and usually when I remind myself to slow it down my results improve. I like to keep it moving though because keeping in contact will allow the hook point to stay pointed up causing less hang ups and break offs.
Awesome fishing Report Optiker. And great tip. I like the slow retrieve also and for me it is a mental thing because you think you want that paddle tail move/swim a lot so you have to retrieve fast. I like keeping the lure deep with a slow retrieve and almost stopping every couple of turns so the lure drops down and then comes back up.
Nice optiker, thanks for the report/ advice. Looks like a nice flounder, I take it you caught it on the same bait. That’s something I want to try more. I have always caught flats on mud minnows other than an occasional on an old stingray grub. I’d like to learn to fish artificial more.

Yes if you look at the flatty’s mouth you will see the bait there. Flatty’s like white lures, in my experience. Spinners work well, and my two biggest flatty’s have come on the original TT. They hit an artificial lure with a solid thump, so none of the wait 10 sec etc stuff applies. Most big ones though, feel like you’re reeling in a branch or oyster cluster till it gets near the boat and starts shaking
A couple years ago I decided to fish only arties, knowing that my catches would go down in the short term. I have not fished bait now for over 3 years. I get more enjoyment tricking them into striking than waiting for a fish to eat.

I’m going to be trying more artificials but think the key word is “learn” for me and if it’s the same as everything else I’ve got to fish em to learn. Thanks for the replys and help.
