I received my tax bill for my boat on Thursday (first one for this boat) and they have the boat itself appraised at 12,400 and outboard at 3,110. If that is what they are willing to pay, where do I collect my check?
I looked all over their website and all I could find is that all appeals need to be submitted in writing before the tax bill is due. I did not see a form or even where to submit it to.
I plan on calling them in the morning but does anyone know if I can take care of this at the Leeds ave. office? Is there a form that needs to be filled out for the appeal on the boat? The outboard assessment seems reasonable but the boat is way off.
Is the boat insured? If so take the insurance bill and show them that.Canât have it both ways.Ins is for say $15k and you want to pay tax on $10K Will not happen.
I have total loss of boat, trailer, and gear at 11k. I donât think its broken down to just the boat but I could call Strickland and find out. NADA has my boat with motor at 8k.
Also, find out what the closest elected official is to running the tax assessment, make it known on this site, and put together a concerted effort to vote that person out of office. This seems to happen a LOT around here, in boat values that are grossly inflated. They seem to do the same thing with property/house values. Iâve seen properties listed with a tax assessment of nearly double of the asking price of the house.
Saying âI am offendedâ is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.
Just appealed mine. Had to go to a marine dealer and have an appraisal done, cost me 10$. Remember that they can only tax you on the hull/motor, the dealer should exclude the value of the trailer and any accessories youâve added. Mine dropped 500$ after having this done last week.
I had to go through this last year. They explained to me that they have a âbookâ with the tax values and thats what they use. I had to do what others have done and got an appraisal and they decrease the bill. Its a pain in the ASS but its worth it to save some money.
Got the papers today, didnât drop 1 penny. Hankle agreed 8k for boat and motor. I solemnly vow to do what I can when Peter Tecklenberg comes up for re-election to get the word out of his inability to reason and excessive taxation of the working family man.
Here is what I sent him in a email (I am sure there are grammatical errors but you get the point)
Mr. Tecklenburg, my name is Matt R. (Abbreviated for general intrawebz viewing) and I pay taxes in Charleston County. I filed an appeal on the appraised value of my boat and outboard. You have them nearly double of what NADA and Hanckle marine value them at.
I received the paperwork today and I see nothing has changed. I am thoroughly disappointed in your inability to do the right thing and charge me taxes on a fair market value.
I always pay my taxes in a timely fashion and consider myself a law abiding citizen. I will of course pay these inflated taxes to continue to be a productive member of this society.
You, sir, are what is wrong with the government and the constant beating down you inflict on what is becoming the working poor of the middle class. Enjoy your spoils and show off your excessive tax surplus that can be divided and distributed to those that do not produce but drain the system.
Soon the pack mule will collapse under the massive burden of taxes imposed at local, state, and federal levels. What will happen then, Mr. Tecklenburg? Who will you tax then?
Disappointed citizen of Charleston County, Matt R.
So hanckel appraised the boat, gave you the appraisal on their letterhead( or another âofficialâ method), and charleston county didnât adjust it accordingly?

Yes. I sent the info in certified mail so I knew they got it.
I am just going to roll over and show them my belly like a good obedient dog. I would have to take a half day off work to go downtown for just a possibility. The loss of pay would equal the reduction in taxes, if I got one.
Maybe I should do like the rich people do and register it in a cheaper state. I could sell it to my dad for 1$ in PA, 30$ a year to register and no annual tax. Greedy f-ers will get nothing then.
