Looking for help. Have a 20ft cc with yamaha 150, HDS 8 w/structure scan. I am in need of replacing both batteries. Has Interstate 24M-XHD (starting) now. Radio would start going into low power mode while engine is off. My question is, should i stay with the same battery or change to a duel or deep cycle battery?
Thanks for the help.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
I switched 2 years ago from deka group 31 deep cycle flooded wet cell batteries to all Sears Die Hard platinum group 31 AGM’s. The die hards are more expensive, but now I don’t have to mess pulling my batteries every 6-12 months to fill with distilled water. Also the die hards come with a 3 year warranty. I went all deep cell even for starting batteries and have not had any issues.

I’m no battery expert but I like having at least 2 batteries aboard for redundancies sake. However, I’m running a 24v trolling motor so have much greater needs than just you cranking and GPS/Radio. I’ve got two standard 27 group AGMs for my trolling motor and a 24 group starting battery for my starter and small electronics. What really worked well for me was finally adding a 3 bank on board charger/maintainer last year. Now I just plug it in the garage when I get home and leave it hooked up until my next trip. A quick glance at the unit with three green lights showing means I’m good to go.
In your boat you might consider a small deep cycle for all the electronics in addition to your main starter battery. But definitely look into the charger/maintainer. I got a NOCO Genius model from Amazon and couldn’t be happier with it.

I would replace one of the group 24 starting batteries with a group 27 deep cycle. Use the group 27 for your house loads when engine is off.

I just put deka 27m7 batteries in this year, could not be happier. I has group 24 deka which were excellent as well.
