Boat Cranked On 3rd Keyturn -- 7 Months Later...

I bought a secondary boat back in Feb. Told my wife it was her Valentines Day gift. Kinda was as she enjoys bass fishing, and our “big” boat isn’t quite something one would willingly take bass fishing…

Anyway, I ran it once in Febuary. That’s it. It’s sat ever since. Same gas, battery switch in “off” position…

Today, I decided it was time to clean it up and check the wiring. I cut off the old terminal connectors, and wired on new ones. Hooked her up to the hose, engaged the choke, and on the 3rd keyturn, I had her purring again.

I’ve owned 3 Yamaha 4-strokes, and a Tohatsu 2-stroke. I’ve fished MANY other boats w/ different motors on it. I don’t wanna sound biased, but it seems like the Yammy always outdoes all the others! Granted, I’d rock a Honda, too, without hesitation.

Who else thinks a Yamaha outboard is nearly bulletproof:question:

It is a great story. Questions: Was it ethanol treated gasoline? Did you use an additive? If so, what?

I got the boat used. I don’t know what the tank had in it, but I did get a bottle of some stuff from Walmart back in Feb. and added the whole thing. It wasn’t blue Stabil, nor Startron. It was in a small bottle, and yellowish in color. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

I just found it odd that it started so easily and ran with no problems. I figured I’d have to “work” to get it started again.

I got back from a deployment and a 94 merc black max I had started easy too. It had been 7-8 months also.

I don’t mean any offense by this (one of my boats has a Yammie 4stroke) but I don’t think there is any brand of motor that has superior resistance to crap gas; none of them will run with bad gas. I also have a 96 Honda 4stroke that I haven’t fired up since last Oct. Needed it for shrimping so I put in new plugs, changed the fluids and filters, charged the battery, fired her up and went shrimping. I think I got lucky.

Not to be a downer but did you take it out and run it or just start it on the hose. There is a big difference with carbs.

Yammer hammers are magic. Never mind, that part of why I don’t have newer (and more) power on my HenryO is because my 1995 Johnson 88spl just won’t cooperate by giving me reason to replace it. 'Put another 75 miles on her last weekend.

Even so, anytime your motor starts it is a good thing. I’m glad yours is keeping you happy.

If i had the choice between a brand new 1990 something 150 black max and a brand new 150 Yamaha 4 stroke, i would take the Mercury.

When something does break, and it will, it will cost 1/4 the cost of a newer engine. Had twin old smoker Mercs for 4 years and had $100 in parts to keep tunning (used spark box). Have twin 150 yammy 4 strokes now, cost over $1k for a slight vibration in one motor that is still not fixed.

Had a slight squeek in the motor, yamaha covered a new balancer assy. Picked up boat and took out, but had a bad vibration and was louder than other motor. took back to shop… $1500 for god knows what, still had same problem. Deployed 2 days later. So Know when i go back to the shop i will have to explain why i didn’t bring the boat back in for almost 8 months.

What i am getting at… is the older smokers can be fixed with a guy with common mechanical sense (Someone from Jiffy Lube). The new motors you need a degree from M.I.T. to change the oil filter… and they will still ■■■■ it up.

What yammy 4 stroke do you have with carbs?

I change my own filters, plugs and lower unit oil on my yami 200 and my degree is from GaTech. I did have Chris V change both thermostats and water pump because they are the experts and it didn’t cost me much, IMO. What is cost vs the amount of time I would have spent made sense to pay Chris V. Love my yami.
