Running about 40 hit something behind Daniel Isle.I saw some floats that were probably attached to some dredge pipe.I was at least 40 feet from the least float when we hit.Made a mess out of the transom and bent the prop and shaft and knocked the skeg off.Took it to Seels for repair and We found the foot had some plastic stuck to it.looked like plastic bag material. What are the dredge pipes made of??.State farm is on it and I have to pay a $500 deductible. If I knew who to call i would put that on them.If it was a pipe the (**() thing was not marked at the end with any float or marker.Glad none of us were hurt.
We saw the Navy boats go past and also saw the other boat at the boat show.Hope all are ok.
Stono; Don’t floats like that have to have some sort of marking on them to ID who they belong to:question: Do you remember what stage of tide it was when you hit it, or what time of day. If it was a dredge pipe you would think they would be working the area and you could see who it is. Maybe the Harbor Master or Coast Guard could help ID them? Glad you were not hurt!
I think some of the newer dredge pipe is HDPE, which is plastic and might scrape off and remain on your foot or broken skeg…make sure the insurance co sees that…

That sucks Stonoman… And, I believe I know exactly where you are talking about. That is the route that I always take to get to Clouter/YHC. I dang near hit something the other day that I saw off of my bow just in time that was about 8" below water. I’ve been extremely cautious around those dredge pipes simply because I have no idea what is going on under there. Good luck with getting the boat fixed up.

I do not think the Ins Co cares??

If you can give them evidence that someone else was negligent, they can use that to pursue regaining their costs from them. Probably the same sort of situation it would be if you had hit something in the road dropped off the trailer of another truck on the highway. I know, this happened to me. I hit a black kitchen chair on I77 at night once, and it hit just perfectly to snag the wiring harness out from under my Tacoma. I lost power to everything behind the cab (inc. the fuel pump) and was dead in the water. A night security guard (road construction company) came by and radio’d the police for me, and the officer had just “happened” to hear of an overloaded truck and utility trailer on his radio on the same stretch of I77 about 15 minutes prior. He radio’d back to have them pull the guy over, and they found him. Sure enough, he confessed to be missing a chair.
I never met the guy, but my insurance company sure went after his like a bulldog.

Ruined a Barvo-1 OutDrive running in the channel in front of the Wando terminal about 10 years ago.
It was a container that had fallen in and was floating about 18" under the surface.
I didn’t know at the time, but was told later that if I could show it was something from the port/dredging that was unmarked that I hit, the SPA would pay for it. Not knowing - I paid $1,800 to Whittons … ouch.
If it happens again, I will radio DNR and the Coast Guard for a formal report.
Anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks, Captain Ross

I hit a sunk sailboat one morning before daylight in Wassaw Sound. It was sitting on the bottom with about 2" of mast above the surface. It ripped the prop, strut, shaft and rudder clean out of the boat. We dang near sank, lucky I had a good supply of wood plugs.
The owner of the sailboat had abandoned it during the night, did not report it and did not mark it. They were held liable for all damages to my boat, plus my loss of charter income while repairs were made. That was the only paid vacation I ever got in the charter business:smiley:

It is important to contact DNR (and perhaps the Coast Guard) to make an official report.
Photos, etc. will help as well.
Failure to mark (and light) a hazard is against the law. The Wando is full of them …

I had a buddy hit one in the early morning in Georgetown. It wasn’t properly submerged or lit. He got a new boat and a new mouth out of it…
Glad you’re ok!

a customer of ours just had the same thing happen
sounds like the dredge company may need a call
Sounds like the USCG needs a call, before someone gets killed!
Definitely file a report, Joe. You deserve something out of this. You have helped so many folks-- you shouldn’t get hung out to dry on this. At least you have a good insurance plan but $500 is still a lot to suddenly have to pay.

Sorry to hear about your boat Joe… Especially after you just got it fixed up! Glad everyone was ok.

Just took my boat the other day for its Spring speed run in the Wando-ran at 52 mph for a while to blow the soot out.
Wish I had read this thread first; won’t do that again.
Very glad to hear you were not injured!
