Boat/Engine Model Year ?

What determines a boat or engine’s model year? Date of manufacture?
When you take possession? Or something else? Cars & trucks have new model years starting in Sept, right? ie Sept 2017 = 2018?

The serial # tells you everything including the year.

Hull ID on the transom of the boat XXXyyaaabcdd where XXX=Manufacturer ID YY=Boat Model aaa=hull number b=month hull laid up (A=January, B=Feb, C=March) c=Year hull laid up, dd=Model Year.

Yamaha quit designating model year a few years ago and go by serial number. Not sure about other motors.

Mercury same thing.
Title says 17. Bill of sale says 18.

Make sure the tax office uses title!

ITS A COMBINATION OF MANUFACTURE DATE AND REGISTRATION DATE.
IF THE MANUFACTURE DATE IS 9/17 AS A DEALER WHEN WE FILL OUT THE TITLE WORK, WE WOULD LIST THAT MOTOR AS A 2018.
THE TITLE WOULD THEN LIST IT AS A 2018.
