A buddy of mine emailed me some pictures of his camping trip on Capers Island. It looked like lots of fun. They used kayaks to get to the island, so they just pulled their yaks on shore and enjoyed the weekend. Made me jealous, and now I kind of want some kayaks. Does anyone know of any boat-friendly camping areas around Charleston or Lake Marion/Moultrie? Somewhere you can beach your boat without having to worry too much about tide and currents?
I don’t know about Charleston, but in lake Marion there are some spots on Persanti island and there are lots of campsites on the congaree river. We camp on the congaree every year. They are first come first serve and used frequently enough to where they stay clean.
buck hall has a nice camp ground…bathrooms, ramp, showers, dock, firepits…secure…on site caretaker…might be hard to get a space right now during first few weeks of shrimp baiting though
Church Island on Marion is an awesome time. There’s great catfishing from the bank, and you can explore the confederate graveyard on the island too. The graveyard always gives me the creeps, but it’s interesting. You can camp with boat, kayak, or canoe. We always launch from Spier’s landing. You’ll see a ton of good bass fishing spots on the way to the island.

We camp at Capers at least once a summer in larger center consoles. it’ not so bad once you’ve done it a few times. We use to danforth anchors, one on the beach and a stern anchor to keep us from getting beached. “50% of the time it works 100% of the time!” Just bring plenty of beer in case you get beached and need to wait until the top of the tide to get off.
Coon Island on Lake Moultrie is a nice spot. They have a few designated camping spots. I was up there this past weekend and it seemed like the party crowd has slacked off and it wasnt too crowded. There are a few other islands in the area where you can camp on Moultrie as well…

An alternative if you can’t find something local. Lake Murray has Dreher Island State Park. You can park your camper or pitch a tent in the space and tie your boat to the bank. It’s a two hour drive, but good pricing and good people.
