Anyone know a good marine surveyor that could do an insurance survey in the next week? Less dollars matter most, but a trade for a trolling/fishing/diving charter would be great!

In the spirit of competition, I would like everyone to know about another locally-owned, full service marine insurance agency. KSA Marine is a group of Charleston guys with a lot of experience on the water. Check out our website at www.ksamarineinsurance.com

We’d love an opportunity to take a look at your policy, as we have had great results as an independent marine insurance agency.

Hey, Pat. Please, tell your Mom, Dad, and Uncle Mark that I said hello. Dad and I helped and supported your father when he ran for Governor because we thought we was an excellent Solicitor and Attorney General. Your mom is a nice lady, too. Your uncle Mark fished with me offshore on the Fountain a couple of times. Great guy. It’s been a long time. Good people in my book. Godspeed to you, Pat. Please don’t hesitate to call me if I can ever team with you on anything (broker, etc.)

Just got my renewaL from Strickland( Travelers) and went up from $600 to $758 for a 257 Grady. I called and after going with Chartis and lowering the insurance cover a tad, got it to $458. Saved $300 from a single phone call. You gotta do your homework and check the rates. Strickland is the best but have to make the calls.

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for the kind words, guys.

Paul, thanks for the ■■■■■■■■ on your renewal. To be honest with you, my staff really should have shopped that for you and got you the better quote automatically without you having to call. Per our office policy, they are supposed to be doing that upon each renewal, and they do, but I guess people make mistakes here and there as they do have a large plate. I must apologize for that. We will be having a staff meeting shortly to make sure they are shopping boats upon renewal per our company policy.

Glad it all worked out well, though! Thanks for letting us serve you, sir.

By the way, Paul, just in case Jan didn’t go over all the better coverages and benefits of the new program with you, I wanted to point out a few details about it that I think will make you even happier, and also point out some differences that are just important to know. It also gives me a chance to inform others of what this program offers. I realize that you may have elected to reduce hull value in order to maximize cost effectiveness per the current age of the boat, but the program we placed you with actually has higher coverages than your old Travelers policy, and it would still have been about $200 cheaper than the Travelers policy even if you had not decreased the hull value. That’s what has me so excited about it. It’s a yacht policy for small boats, with a price and coverages that make the decision easy. For example, Travelers has only $500 towing; the new program has $5,000. Travelers only has $5000 Med Pay; the new program has $30,000. Travelers only has $2500 personal effects (and fishing eq); the new program has $25,000. The default trailer value on the new program is also $10,000, instead of a declared value with the Travelers. The new program also includes agreed value coverage on the outboard motor, which Travelers does not (Travelers charges an extra $100 for that, which would have made your Travelers premium that much higher). Other differences are better in some ways and tr

Lee, have you ever heard of some carriers covering and other carriers not covering sinking at the dock due to the failure of a thru the hull fitting from corrosion?
I was talking to a marine adjuster a few years ago and it came up.

It ain’t as bad as the pig tries to make it sound.

I have not heard of this happening, but they all cover that kind of thing the same way: accidents are covered, but neglect and lack of maintenance are excluded. If a thru-hull fitting were to just break and sink the boat, not due to neglect, lack of responsible maintenance, or any other excluded cause of loss, then it would normally be covered; however, if a fitting were to fail as a result of a lack of responsible maintenance and resulting corrosion over a period of time (which, I think, would have to be pretty significant to sink a boat), causing the boat to sink, AND if that lack of proper maintenance or neglect were deemed to be the proximate cause of the loss, then that would fall under a classic exclusion that is common to all policies. Lack of maintenance and neglect are excluded across the board. It’s not a matter of one company or the other. It’s a matter of what caused the loss. One key to understanding what is covered and not covered are the words “sudden and accidental”. Things that happen gradually over time are not covered. Sudden accidents are. There is also a section in every policy where the insured agrees to certain responsibilities, including the reasonable maintenance of the vessel. All policies state that coverage is voided by failure to uphold the insured’s responsibilities. If you’ve ever seen those sailboats sitting in the harbor, then you know that some people let their boat sit and rot. Boats that remain in the water for long periods of time must be maintained regularly and properly to stay on top of things like corroding fittings, and insurance companies know this. So, if you read any policy, you will find that lack of maintenance and neglect are excluded. So, for example, if you forget to put your plug in your boat, and you sink it upon putting it in the water, it’s covered because that’s an accident; on the other hand, if you let your boat sit at the dock without maintaining the plug for so long that the plug rusts away, that’s on you.

Gotcha Covered,
Lee

Lee also switched me over to Chartis. Saved me about $100 from my old Progressive policy. Thanks again.

thanks for the reply, it makes sense when explained by a professional.
