Gotchacovered on here is Lee Strickland at Strickland Marine Insurance. That’s what he specializes in and from all accounts, he’s the go to guy in the Charleston area. He’s a nice guy and will help you any way he can.

A friend of mine works for City Marina, email him…he sells boat insurance.
The last thing you want to do is have a glorified auto policy for your boat, and I see it all the time.
Example:
You have a policy on your boat with an agreed value of $20,000. The unthinkable happens, and your boat becomes a total loss that happens to be sunk in the center of a channel, marine sanctuary, state park, etc. Basically, it must be removed (SC made it a criminal offense to leave a vessel abandoned 3 years ago). Let’s say the removal cost is going to be $35,000.
How much do you get from your insurance policy that doesn’t include wreck removal? The agreed value of $20,000.
Who is on the hook for the wreck removal? You, the owner.
Who is on the hook for whatever amount is owed on the boat loan? You, the owner.
Whatever policy you get for your boat, make sure it includes wreck removal, salvage, environmental, etc. A genuine marine insurance policy will cover these things, and will differ in depreciating agreed value among other things.
Also, make sure you are familiar with the ‘sue and labor clause’ in your policy which basically states that you, as the insured, are responsible for preventing further damage or loss in the event of an incident that you believe will result in a claim against your policy.
Disclaimer: I am not a licensed insurance agent. This is just what I see in my line of work, and it usually results in the customer being as upset with the salvor as they are with their insurance company because they were without a complete understanding of their policy.

Strickland is probably the local leader in boat insurance, and have heard nothing but positive ■■■■■■■■ from customers and my brother keeps the boat with them…Also have a few buddies with KSA and they have been very happy as well…my biggest thing has always been being able to deal with someone that I personally know
