Boat Landings

For all you fishermen, skiers, and saltwater lovers we need help with some new or upgraded boat landings. Bushy Park landing is in really sad shape at low tide. Virginia ave, is the same way at low tide and at high tide you probably won’t be able to get under the old railroad trestle. The Hess landing has been shut down. The only other choices are Remley’s and Shem Creek. So the bottom line is numbers, we may be able to get some relief if we get enough people to scream loud enough to the Politician’s,Mayors, and the head of DNR. I have talked with most of the mayor,s and politician’s and as expected you get the same old song and dance. There must be some land between Bushy Park and Charleston that could be acquired for a boat landing. Furthermore, West of the Cooper we remain second class citizens?

If it wasn’t for the Charleston County Parks system there wouldn’t be hardly any public boat landings. I rode through the Charleston City Marina last week to find the boat ramp there is a useless slope of concrete with no intention for use. After living in the area nearly 30 years, I can’t remember one new boat landing opening in the Charleston area. Yet there has to be thousands of more boaters crowding the very few resources. DNR doesn’t want the responsibility or cost. The City of Up Chuck has huge property along the Cooper River and has done absolutely zip with it for water access. Most people can not afford a drystack or wetslip or have a boatlift. I am curious how Shem Creek, the Harbor and the Ripley Light Marina are getting dredged, but not Bushy Park and other public landings that are nearly unusable.

I have just gotten my first boat and I was very surprised to see how few public options there are for putting in my boat. I actually ended up getting a membership at a landing because I knew the couple of public landings (Shem Creek/Remleys) would be a nightmare once it starts getting warm. I hear it’s nearly impossible to get a spot out on Shem Creek on weekends unless you’re up with the sun.

This is the most unfriendly boating state I have ever lived in. I just don’t get it.

Surprised to hear that. I live on James Island and have 4 ramps within 10 minutes of the house. But I’m not that familiar with other areas. Where that might be the case.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

Was it up at the 41 bridge on the Wando? I just bought in up there too, for the same reason. Well, not that I hear its impossible on the weekends in the summer as much as I have experienced it. First time I took the boat out after moving back here from Beaufort I first went to Bushey, but it was low tide, then I tried Leeds Ave, but there was a line down the street. We ended up putting in all the way down at Limehouse. Thats ridiculous.

Berkeley County studying dredging options for popular Bushy Park landing
? Posted: Thursday, July 4, 2013 2:44 p.m.
In April, Berkeley County Council approved spending $58,200 on a feasibility study to figure out the best options for dredging the site. Officials hope the problem will be fixed by 2016.
The county probably won?t know the pricetag for another year, and the work is set to be done in 2015.

The above is quoted from the article. Dates don’t make sense but… At least it is being looked at. Perhaps some noise is needed.

I actually signed up at the Sullivan’s island ramp. It’s relatively close to where we live. Hopefully it will save a bit of a headache…

I know a spot… Not telling though… Unless you’re smart, pretty easy then.

Who is berkeley county kidding, DNR told me two years ago the cost for dredging would be around one million and they don’t know where to put the spoil or how much that would cost. DNR also informs me as long as the tug boats and huge barges use the river there will always be shoaling at Bushy Park. Dredging will have to be done frequently.Furthermore, Berkley county should not take on the cost of doing a study or paying for any dredging. The ramp is used by the TRI-COUNTIES. The North Charleston Mayor’s office informs me they will condemn some property and build a new ramp in the future? There used to be a single lane ramp with adequate parking at the old Naval base, that area would be ideal for the west of the Cooper folks. Get the pens out and the phones ringing and give the politicians notice that we demand some action on this trivial matter. Tight line’s?

There will never be enough ramps.

Someone mentioned getting on the water with the sun. Yep. Even at the pay ramps you better be there early. If you plan on putting in after 10 am on the weekend you will be disappointed during season.

I have been a member of the 41 ramp since it opened. That one gets real crowed during season as we’ll.

I posted this in inshore discussion, but will repeat here. Money has been allocated for Bushy area, but they wont say say what they are doing yet. New ramp or dredge

That’s all great quarterpound. However, we need to keep reminding DNR and all the politicians from the tri county area that we demand action on this issue. How many years have we been waiting.
