Me and my ole lady went night fishing on mt boat in Beaufort about 2 weeks ago. So we called it a night and headed towards the boat ramp. All of a sudden we hit like 1.5ft at like 50 yards from boat ramp. So backed boat and went another course and hit 1.7 ft. So backed up boat and tried another route and hit .7 ft. Next thing i know my dash light for the motor came on and it went out. Came back on then went back out again but this time it shut all power down including motor. So i knew then something was wrong. My girl looked at me and pointed and said your motor smoking. So i turned around and I be d@$n it was smoking. So we started pouring water on it as it smoked and sizzled. So something said take off the cover and when I did flames roared from under the cover. So me scared and thinking motor about to blow up, we quickly started drenching it with water, not even thinking about my fire extinguisher. So finally got fire out and i looked at my battery and cables and one of the battery post had melted and also the battery had a hole in it. Can anyone tell me what could have started that fire.
What kind of motor do you have? Hard to say exactly but it could have been as simple as the battery shorting out and no fuse protection or it didn’t blow the fuse. Have you checked the battery cables for bad spots that could have caused the wire to short to a ground? A bad rectifier can short out also cause it to do the same thing. I had a rectifier short out on my motor and it almost started on fire. I noticed something wasn’t right when all of my gauges started acting funny.
MOTOR COULD HAVE RUN HOT FROM THE SHALLOW WATER.
PLASTIC INSULATION UNDER THE COWL CAN MELT WITH AN OVERHEAT.
INSULATION MELTS OFF, CREATING A HARD SHORT, BATTERY AND CABLES OVERHEAT, AND CAUSE A FIRE.
SEEN IT HAPPEN BEFORE.

IF I RESPOND IN ALL CAPS, ITS NOT ON PURPOSE, AND I AM NOT YELLING
Man Gone, sorry to hear that. At least you were at the landing and not in some far off creek AND, no one was hurt. Hope the damage isn’t too bad and you are back on the water soon. You are one of the frequent posters I live vicariously through.

Hey guys its an 90 Hp Johnson Saltwater Series.Highvoltagesc and ChrisV that sounds about exactly what it did…Right after i got stuck in the mud that third time thats when the dash light flickered and that when all power went out. Hey DFreedom. Yeah buddy it was actually a scary feeling cause it could have blown up on us. Yeah not being able to get on the water right now is killing me. Have to get money up to get it fixed because Lord knows what damaged it caused. Someone also did say it might was the rectifier.
