Boat Motor Maintenance

I figured several of the veterans on here could provide some insight on motor maintenance. Looking into an annual service by a marine shop it appears that it can average $250-$300. I read through the motor manual and am considering getting everything and doing it myself. The marine shop prices seem pretty excessive and it would seem fairly simple to do my own maintenance. Any advice on this would be appreciated. By the way my motor is a 2008 F90 Yamaha 4 stroke.

Try Chris V, I hear nothing but good things!

Thanks,

Most stuff you can do yourself, but you’ll need the right tools. Can you test the compression on your cylinders yourself? My rule of thumb is to have a qualified mechanic do the work while under warranty. Even after the warranty is up, it’s hard put a price on the convenience.

I would recommend purchasing the manufacturers shop manual. It contains a wealth of knowledge and will give much more confidence if you decide to maintain the engine yourself.

I change my own oil and foot oil every year myself along with taking the prop off and greasing the splines. I had a 115 yamaha on a key west and could do this for less than $150. in less than 1 hr. I now have a 60 mercury on a triton aluminum and do the same. I use amsoil so thats why it is a little high.
