Boat Move Info

Looking for a Truck company to pull 36 Contender from Venice to Charleston! Thanks for the help.

you may want to contact Contender and see who they use…may have an empty eastbound return.

That’s good advice from Dernflatlander. Don’t use just any Tom, Dick, or Harry. Make sure you get proof of liability insurance from whomever you use, with specific coverage for hauling. Marine insurance typically covers your liability on the water (if you have liability coverage) but only your property (boat) itself while it’s on a trailer being towed; it does not cover your liability arising from the collision of your trailered boat with another vehicle while being towed on a trailer. That kind of liability is covered under auto insurance (if the proper coverage is in force), and if a paid hauler is carrying your boat, you will have no coverage; he must have it himself (i.e., the company towing your boat). If you have full/proper auto coverage, and you are trailer your boat when it damages someone else’s property, your auto policy defends you. However, if a friend (or paid tower) towes your boat with his vehicle, his auto insurance (or commercial auto insurance) would be liable, and some may not realize that. If someone else towes your boat with his automobile, it could become a problem if someone sued you (since you owned the boat) because the incident would not be covered under your marine or auto insurance, since neither the water, nor your automobile were involed. So, just check into this. It should only take a few minutes for any towing/trucking company to pull their proof of insurance and fax it to you. SOP in many industries and transactions. A lot of people don’t worry about this kind of risk, but we paid a claim a few years ago when a man fell asleep at the wheel and his 31’ boat rolled down the highway. It happens, so make sure you have your armor on by getting the proper paperwork from the hauler first.

Truckers bid for your business. I got a guy looking for a backhaul from the NE to bring a boat from Baltimore to my doorstep for $300 when gas was much more than it is now. Added a $100 tip.

He provided copies of all his credentials, insurance info, etc up front.

Even when the truck provides proof of insurance, call his insurance carrier and make sure he is REALLY insured. I work in transportation and you wouldn’t believe how easy it is to get a fake insurance form.

That is some sound advice!!

Being in the insurance business, I have seen fraudulent certificates of insurance as they are easy to duplicate or “doctor”.

Not a bad idea at all. He’s right: it wouldn’t be hard to fake a dec page if someone was that crooked. Ironically, I don’t normally go to that extent myself; I just get a proof of insurance from them. It’s definitely better to be safe than sorry, though, and calling the company to validate the POI is sound advice.
