about to purchase a new boat from a dealer in NC. Looking at the SC DNR web site they state you need a title to register the boat. Since ere is a lien against the boat I will not have the title. Any one been through this before and know what is needed to get the boat and trailer registered in SC? Hoping to have all my ducks in a row so when I get the new boat I can start using her ASAP… Thanks I’m advance
You’re good with the Bill of Sale from the dealer for 30 days.
The dealer will have to satisfy the balance of the loan and then retain the title from the lein holder. Once the title is signed over to you, take it to the DNR office in Columbia and walk out with the new SC title.
OBTW…You will need to pay SC State Sales tax. They will handle that in the Columbia office also. Just don’t go on a Friday afternoon, and take plenty of quarters for the parking meters.
Just realized you are buying a “new” boat, not a “new to you” boat.
In that case, the dealer should have all the proper paperwork, just like buying a car and the bank holds the title but you still get the tags and registration.

No matter what download the South Carolina Bill of Sale and make the dealer fill it out and sign. I had a pile of problems with trying to use the out of state dealers paperwork. the DNR would only accept the SC Bill of Sale form.
Congrats on the new boat.
Bought a boat from Maryland last year and used owners bill of sale without any problems… Went to James island and they were more than helpful.
Thanks for all the great responses! Hopefully I’ll have her in the water soon.
walk up to the counter at the DNR at Ft Johnson with all (or at least most) of your paperwork in order and it will be a very pleasant experience. to me it is worth the trip out there to walk out of that building with registration/stickers in hand as opposed to depending on our postal service- not to mention the anguish of putting it in the mail and hoping everything is filled out correctly and on the correct form. it is nothing like going to the DMV and there is plenty of FREE parking.
