boat sticker

Can not quite understand tax notice on boat and motor, decal runs out in July of this year but I got a tax notice in Jan and now it is overdue,is it not like a car pay the month before it goes out?I probably should have paid it when I got it but now I have late fees.Input?

My boat registration is good until 2015 but I will have tax payments well before that. The registration does not have to coincide with the taxes like a car usually does. My old boat I had to pay taxes 3 months before the registration ran out.

Same thing here. Mine expired in May, I got my notice in January.

taxes paid yearly, just like your car. registration paid every three years.

Taxes paid to your county first of the year. Taxes are paid in the rear. If you own the boat on Jan. 1 you owe the taxes for the whole year. If you sell the boat Feb. 1 you still owe the taxes for the whole year.

Yep. Personal Property taxes are assessed by and paid to the county where you live (or where you keep the boat if you live outside of SC).

Registration is through the DNR. There is no connection.

Pay the tax and the late fees. They will only increase if you put it off any longer.

this is just too true. personal property taxes in s.c. we never fully own anything in this state. your cars, boats, houses, etc are all things that the dirty little bas%$^&s can take. oops sorry. i jumped up on my soap box. i am down now.

^^^preach on brother…you never own nothing in this state…

i have not received a tax bill for my boat. registration runs out in aug. i should probably call them. Tax office right? not DNR

Yes, it's your county tax assessor. You pay in January for the previous year but the test is, did you own the boat on January 1? If you bought the boat on or after January 2 of a given year, you will not owe taxes for that year, just the years after that.
