This is my first post. I will be looking to buy a flats boat soon.
I was wondering if there are seperate titles for the boat, trailer and motor in SC.
It seems that there are many more flat boats available in Florida. Does anyone have experience buying a boat in Florida and getting the necessary titles transfered to SC?
Does Florida have seperate titles?
I will probably buy from a private owner. So I want to make sure I get the correct papers that I will need in SC.
I plan on having a surveyor examine the boat prior to purchasing it.
Thanks.
The boats I’m interested in:
Ranger Phantom
Ranger Banghee Extreme
Hewes
Maverick
Dolphin (Don’t see many of these for sale)
Looking for boat about 17’ that I can put in my garage when not in use.
To make sure you get all the paperwork you need just call DNR and ask them what you will need to bring to register a boat in SC. If you are in the Charleston area DNR is on James Islans and will gladly show you what you need. They are very helpful people and have always been very friendly.
I bought my boat in Jacksonville, FL. Getting everything registered in SC wasn’t a big deal, went to the DNR office and they were very helpful - make sure you have a photo or rubbing of your boat AND motor ID numbers! I forgot to bring a picture of my motor serial plate, but the lady at the window let my wife email a picture to her while we waited. Got everything turned in, paid, and walked out with stickers and titles in less than half an hour.
FL titles boat/motor together, and the trailer separately. SC titles boat and motor separately, but not the trailer. Go figure.
I second MrHardware, make sure you check with DNR to see what you will need to bring back so the transfer will be smooth sailing from there on. They are extremely nice there, but you have to remember it’s still their job to make sure you have everything necessary to make the transfer. Though, if nothing has recently changed, you do not need to have a title for your trailer.
