Boat trailer for 19' Mako

Hey everyone, just have a few quick questions…need some info from you pros with experience.

I was given a 1972 Mako and need to buy a trailer for it, seeing as how it doesn’t come with one. I know older Makos are heavy and I’ve no idea whether or not I should be looking for a single or tandem axle trailer. I’ve done the research online, I understand that the trailer should be able to hold the boat and all the stuff in the boat (fuel, gear, extra equipment etc.) It’s always been my understanding that a tandem is better for towing heavy items. Am I right in assuming that?

I’ve never owned a boat or trailer of any kind but common sense tells me a tandem would potentially cost more to maintain…on the other hand, a heavy boat on an undersize trailer with a lower axle rating could be expensive too.

I’ve located about half a dozen decent aluminum trailers online that I’ll be looking at and have found several trailers that are priced in my budget. Just wanted to gather some info before I make a purchase. Also, a few are out of state (FL & NC)and any tips/info regarding the purchase of trailers with bills of sale only would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help. Much appreciated!

Typically if the weight of the hull alone is less than 2000 pounds then you should be all right with a single axle trailer. I have an Edgewater 185 that is about as heavy as you will find in that size range and a 3500# single axle does fine. However, If I ever wanted to trailer anything more than locally I would feel a whole lot better with a tandem.

You’ll be good with a single axle. Yes, tandem axle can handle more weight and pulls much better.
