boat trip to beufort

I know im gonna get the “use the search feature yourself” statement from any of you, but it is not working for some reason and keeps giving me a server error. anyways…ive seen topics on this several times and cant find those topics. My wife want to make this trip from charleston this summer and was just wondering how long the trip took at reasonable cruising speeds and about how much fuel others used on the trip. I have a sea hunt 207 with a yamaha 150 on it.

also where did you stay and leave the boat.

Thanks, feel free to tag previous topics if you can find them for me.

I have done it many times. From Limehouse it takes ~3hrs running pretty steady. I have always left my boat at the downtown marina and stayed at the Best Western which is right across the street. I haven’t paid too much attention to fuel as the boat I had until recently didn’t have fuel management.

We did it all of the time. Ran down for the Beaufort water festival and come back the same day. Stop by Morgan Island (Monkey Island). If you have kids with you they will get a kick out of the monkeys. Take the cut instead of going all the way to the sound. It is a god boat ride.

I’ve done it a dozen times in everything from sailboats, motor yachts and big sportys to skiffs. Nothing to it, ICW all the way. It’s about 60 river miles, shouldn’t take much longer than 3 hours even if you dawdle. I doubt it would take more than 30 gallons with your rig, one way.

The last couple of times we left the boat at the Municipal Marina downtown and stayed at the Beauliea House bed and breakfast on Cat Island. The proprietress picked us up at the marina and delivered us back. She picked us up at midnight once in a tropical storm and we were drowned rats. She made us a hot meal, washed and dried our clothes…can’t say enough good about it  Beats the heck out of the Best Western, which is right across the street from the marina.

From IOP to beaufort and back I burned 45 gallons in a 24’ boat with a 250 four stroke. Did like others and left the boat at the marina and stayed downtown. Ate dinner at Saltus and headed home on Sunday. The trip down took us about 4 hours and we spent about 9 coming back at slow speeds and we did a little fishing also. It’s a fun trip

One thing I would recommend for the trip. Before you head down try to get the NOAA strip chart for that stretch of the intracoastal. It the Casino Creek to Beaufort River one. It is nice to look at your trip in advance. There are a lot of turns to the intracoastal and it is a big help to do a little pre-planning. This is a fun weekend trip and I’m sure will wife will like it too.

I did the trip for my first time last summer in a 25 ft pontoon and had a great time.
We cruised the entire time at a very moderate speed and took us about 7hours = Hobcaw to Lady’s Island.
That included a detour to Bennett’s point to grab some gas and another detour to hit up Monkey Island.
You are probably not going to need this, but the only place that I am aware of between St. Johns Yacht Harbor and Beaufort to get gas is Bennett’s Point. It’s about a mile or so out of the way.
The toon had a 22 gallon tank plus we used a spare 5 gallon jerry can.
We lucked out with the weather. Crossing the sound was calm both ways for us. Not sure I would try again with a toon in dicey weather. Apparently it can blow pretty hard.

Many times here also. DT Marina and Rhett House for us. DT Marina used to have free use of a car for groceries. Saltus for $$$ dinner, Chocolate shop is a must do, Blackstone is good for a “packed” lunch for the boat and lots of restaurant/bars on the river-walk area. ~55 NM from Wappoo Cut. The horse carriage tour is cool and the cemetarys offer cool photo ops if you’re into photography.

There is a mariner obstruction notice recently; http://cruisersnet.net/category/sc-stono-north-edisto/

The entrance to North Edisto (changes constantly) and the entrance to Coosaw river warrant a look before you go. Other than that it’s marked well.

We rode to Daufuskie, rented a golf cart one day and rode that island. The cart was ~ $60 but it was a blast! It’s ~ 30 miles from DT Marina.

Ditto to all above. Great trip.

Only caveat - St. Helena’s can get big. There is often an ocean swell rolling well into St. Helena’s. If a squall catches the current right it can get a little bumpy. Your rig would be safe, just, maybe not completely comfortable. If it got nasty, you can avoid the lower part of St. Helena via Lucy Point Creek and the Morgan River.

The last 2 times we did it from Savannah to Charleston in my 18’ dory, with a 2 stroke 70 Yamaha, I filled up in Beaufort both ways coming and going. It took about 20 gallons from Savannah to Beaufort and 17 from Beaufort to Charleston. Each way. My boat has a 40 gallon tank and could make the entire run, but I like fuel in the tank.
