BOATERS BEWARE. NEW DOCK

If you are heading south on the icw from the iop marina and are headed into Hamlin creek be careful. A new dock is being built and it will be a hazard to navigation in my opinion. Can’t believe a permit was issued for it.

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.

Holy Smokes that’s big for right there! I can’t believe they did that either.

Wow, that really sticks out. Is there not a limit as to how far out a dock can stick out into a waterway?

I can’t believe anyone would even want to have it stick out that far there, let alone allow a permit for it. Just shows enough money can buy whatever you want on the island. The homeowner is going to really regret it next summer with all the traffic cutting around their dock to the creek, beating up the floater.

Clyde Dangerfield (former no 3 rep in legislature)used to live on the island in that spot and even he could not get a dock to the waterway because there was a small creek in the marsh. Guess whoever bought his property from his estate has better lawyers.

What’s the liability on a dock like that? Is there any? Does it require lights?

Coming from breech inlet the other night I came under the bridge and noticed the little anchor light on the crane. Pitch black out and wasn’t expecting a new dock to pop up out of nowhere. Thank god I stopped because you would have read about me in the news. They really really need some lights on that dock.

I am not very familiar with the Laws governing this ,but I am extremely surprised that it is being built almost in the mouth of the creek. I believe it will be a real hazard for those boating in the area.

the small creek the dock crosses was previously considered navigable- a sand bar has built up at the mouth of the creek restricting access. A permit was issued to extend the dock in line with the other docks on the main body of water( ICW ). The remainder of docks towards the IOP marina can also be extended to this same line, and I’m sure they will eventually.
This is not about better lawyers- we move docks all the time due to creek channels moving, sometimes we extend them, sometimes we shorten them.
This work is being performed by a business associate- my guys built the bridge over the small creek and the walkway extension out to the ICW. We will be returning to build the roof and install handrails.

the ACOE and OCRM both permitted this extension

Like the acoe ever did any thing anyway!

Well in that case, it's fine just where it is.

Just seeing it there makes me shake my head. I really hope that WHEN someone hits it, that they are not seriously hurt.

You’re right, it’s just a matter of time, Fritz. I just hope they are smart enough to at least make sure that dock is lit up at night for anyone cutting the corner on a high tide.

First thing that came to mind when I saw that last week was “someone is going to get killed running into that at night”…it is nearly half way into the ICW. It looks so out of place that I took pictures and sent it to my buddies as a heads up.

Is there a requirement that it be lit after dark? I don’t spend a lot of time on the water at night but I seem to recall quite a few dark docks. Seems the owner could face some serious liability if not.

that pic was at low tide- the deck height is about 3 ft above the water at high tide- there is plenty of room to go around it just like going around bridge pilings or anything else

Do you think that dock is safe and should have been allowed to be built? Unbaked answer please.
