Boaters Ed

So under the age of 16 you have to get a boaters education license to operate a boat on your own. All that required is one 8 hour class taught by the USCG and a test at the end, I did that last year. Now I’m qualified to drive anything from a 14’ Jon boat to a 75’ sportfisher. Which is absurd. I think that anybody getting a a new boat, before they can register it should be required to take and pass that course, no matter the age and vessel. And it should have to he renewed just like a driver’s license every x number of years. How many of yall agree?

What problem are you trying to solve? Is that problem in your head a real problem, or is it a “what if” scenario that has never come to fruition? What do the statistics say about boat fatalities? Is the number of fatalities due to operator inexperience a significant number? If so, then what percentage of people could be saved by “properly” educating one?

Those are the questions that you should ask yourself before having a “gut reaction”…

Sometimes people perceive “problems” that aren’t really there… Be careful what laws you ask for or they might just come true and they might cost you a lot of money…

Also, I don’t want to hear that “if it could save even ONE life it’s worth it” garbage… Boating is a luxury, so saving “one life” could easily be accomplished by not stepping on a boat…

I flat out disagree. Those courses may teach you the basics - but they teach you nothing about how to operate a boat. All it would equal is more fee’s, more time and more hassel.

And as skinneeeeeej was saying - with all the complaining that we may do about bad boaters, accidents are few and far between. And most are caused by stupidty or booze and would happen regardless.

The reason we have a drivers license is because the states/government built the roads - and they grant us permission to drive on them. You dont have a right to drive, you have permission. The waterways are not the same.

Yep, that is code for “you are about to get hosed”.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

I totally disagree. Look at all the idiots driving cars who have a “DRIVERS LICENSE”. Experience is the true teacher, and that’s something you can’t put a price on. Of course some people never learn…

There are also many who believe in doing whatever if it saves even one life until it applies to something they support.

I teach a boat certification course for my employer. One of the things we stress several times during the three day course is that this is a basic course. We are teaching basic navigation, rules, maintenance, safety, marlinspike, emergency procedures, etc. We tell them that at the end of the course you will NOT be ready to jump behind a multi-screw cigarette boat and haul a$$ or any sort of huge commercial tug. This is just to teach you enough to be confident in small boats and hopefully know what to do when you get out on the water.

Experience is the best teacher.

You could have all the boater’s education programs you want, it’s still not going to stop some idiot who thinks the boat runs on booze better from getting behind the helm and doing something stupid. The number of captains capable of incredible seamanship grows exponentially after they’ve been on the juice all day.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

I’d be happy if they just knew and followed the basic stuff. Like don’t drive 10 feet past my dock going 10 mph creating a 3’ wake, or going 40 mph, or pull up a skier within 20’ of my dock, etc.

Is it terrible that I laughed really hard when the driver got thrown to the deck with his sunglasses flying off? That just seemed hilarious.

Slow down and quit showing off, dummy.

Many of them know. They just don't care. The best way to educate them for something like that is a ticket...

Not as funny in the original video.

Don’t “race” with a bunch of people on your boat.

have numerous instances with same boat owner/driver on video, DNR says that can’t do anything unless they witness it

I feel your pain. Drives me nuts. I just wish that the officers would do a "no wake crackdown" one weekend and write tickets for anyone with a wake over 1 foot in a no wake zone. I think word would spread fast after they did that a few times.
