Lake Murray, SC (WLTX) - Three boaters were killed in two separate accidents on Lake Murray late Saturday night. Investigators say the incidents happened about thirty minutes apart.
Robert McCullough with the Department of Natural Resources says both accidents happened between 10 and 11 pm near the Lighthouse Marina and Lake Murray Marina.
He says four boats were involved in the two separate accidents. A total of thirteen people were on those boats.
McCullough tells News 19 that in addition to the three fatalities, one person is in critical condition. The boaters are all in their mid- to-late twenties.
He says he doesn’t know if alcohol was a factor in the accidents.
News 19 has a crew on the scene and will bring you the latest tonight at 6 and 11.
thats so sad. our thoughts and prayers go out to the families. my guess is alcohol was involved since they were all younger adults. I know accidents can happen anytime to anyone, but booze (which i love, dont get me wrong) greatly raises the chances. There are some maniacs on the lake, and some boats(boaters) that drive extremely too fast for the conditions. just my 2cents. Thats strange that they happened so close in time to one another .
I’d almost be willing to bet my left testicle that alcohol was involved (said as I sit on my sofa drinking a Fat Tire beer.) I don’t drink on my boat though.

UPDATED: Victims identified in Lake Murray boating deaths
By ADAM BEAM - abeam@thestate.com
Three people are dead and one is critically injured after four boats collided in separate accidents on Lake Murray last night.
The accidents happened between Susie Ebert Island and the Coast Guard Auxiliary station on Flotilla Island, near the Lake Murray and Lighthouse marinas, according to Lt. Robert McCullough with the Department of Natural Resources.
The two women killed in the first incident have been identified as Kelli Nichole Bullard, approximately 25, of Lexington, and Amber Golden, 24, of Woodville, Ala.
Boat crash site
The victim in the second accident has been identified as Matthew “Kyle” Howk, 22, of Columbia.
The first incident involved two boats – a 23-foot Key West with a 225 horsepower Yamaha outboard motor and a 20-foot Sylvan with a 150 horsepower Suzuki outboard motor – each with four couples on board. Two women died in that incident, McCullough said.
The second incident involved two boats: a 23-foot Sea Pro with a 225 horsepower Mercury outboard motor and a 14-foot Fishmaster jon boat with a 25 horsepower Mercury outboard motor. The Sea Pro had three men on board and the Fishmaster had two men on board. One man died, and another was critically injured, McCullough said.
The deaths are the first on Lake Murray this year and bring the statewide total so far to 11. Last year, 11 people total died in boating accidents in South Carolina, the lowest number since the Department of Natural Resources began keeping track, McCullough said.
With boating season just beginning, McCullough said the number of deaths so far concerns him. “It is going to be a long boating season,” he said.
McCullough said there is “no indication” that the boaters did not have the required number of life jackets on board, but said it does not appear anyone was wearing a life jacket. However, McCullough said this is a rare instance where a life jacket would not have made a difference.

It is a real shame. Im not going to speculate on who or what was at fault. What is pissing me off is all the comments from the public on thestate.com and other news sites saying strong regulation in the form of horsepower and other restrictions. Its obvious that the involved boaters did not follow some sort of procedure regarding safety. I just hope maybe this is a early wakeup call to everyone. Wouldn’t mind more enforement out there.

It is a shame, I don’t think we need stronger regulations. I do think that boaters and especially PWC operators need to take a course. It is obvious to me that a lot of people have no clue what the rules are. I fished back by the rusty anchor one night and left due to the boats flying in and out. Pretty scary considering i fish almost every saturday night, could have easily been me. I have had some close calls before at night. I am switching to weeknights for the summer.
And to think i have friends that laugh at me and think i am crazy for refusing to fish the lake on the weekends. i keep tellin them its a mad house out there startin fri afternoon till mon mornin.
A couple of years ago my bride and I were fishing a night tourny. We’re pinned hard to bottom with front and rear anchors out, fishin cut. Anchor light on and spreader light on - highly visible. It was a nice, breezy summer night. Here comes this 26’+ sailboat and we can hear the laughter and partying. I sez to BeBe: I don’t think they see us, she agrees. Well, they’re within a couple of hundred feet and sailing along at a pretty good clip, so I give them 5 blasts on the horn. Dennis Connor finally looks up and sees that he’s about to run us over and steers to starboard missing us by about 15’. That’s when I hear some nitwit chick on the blow boat say: “well, we have the right of way”. That’s when I launched into a part of my vocabulary that I am not proud of. That sailboat would have crushed our bay boat. It is not the power on the back of the boat that’s a danger; it’s the strength between the ears of the captain.
I am saddened for the families of this weekends tragedies and pray that there are no more incidents on our beautiful lake this year.
Right on dfl, I took the boating safety class, made my wife take it and Paid for it.have had the vessel inspected. I’ve done everything I should to be safe. I think everyone should and treat it as a license, I think it is the only way to make sure every boater has some sort of knowledge before operating. Ps… I would have shot a flare at them.

I’ve heard, contrary to to the news reports, that the guys fishing in the jon boat were actually in a no wake zone and hit by a boat racing from (or to?) the first accident…
Has anyone heard any more details on this?

havn’t heard anything; but for all of this to go down in such a small area on the same night sounds pretty relevent but we may never know. stay safe everyone.
I tell ya i fish a lot of the lakes around here and that stuff aways scares the crap out of me. I was on santee one night in the pouring rain headed to the ramp and some @ss was sitting in the middle on the river with no lights on. I only missed him by a few feet. I only wish everyone would use that thing on there sholders for something besides a hat rack. My prayer go to the families of those people that passed.
