I am looking at purchasing my 1st boat and while I’ve been on the water most of my life I’d feel better taking a boating course or two. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.
I’d like to take a basic boating class, something on navigation, something on engine maintenance and if there’s anything that discusses the local area that would be great.
I saw the free SCDNR course - has anyone taken this?

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Wow!!! Best post ever. USCG Aux courses use to be the standard. Hope they still offer practical help.
If you find that you are not getting what you are looking for to make you more confident behind the helm, I promise that I will do everything in my power to help any guy who is wanting to be a better boater on the water.
PM me if you are not finding what you are looking for.

I started a business a few years ago called “The Boat Coach” thought it was a million dollar idea. Only problem was/is that no one is willing to admit that they need help on the water. Congrats to the original poster for realizing a little instruction can go a long way on the water.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>I just took it. I reel like a real “doofus” for not having tested myself for so many years. Passed fairly handily but… I still feel I should have tested myself against a current standard way before now.
The fueling information was VERY refreshing for me. I don’t deal with the scenarios that could cause the biggest/common problems they address but, I feel better prepared for having reviewed the information.
I took this one last year. I learned a few things and remembered a lot of stuff that had faded from my memory. It’s never a bad idea to refresh the knowledge.

Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement on this.
I think I’ll start with the free DNR course and move up from there. Nothing will beat the experience that I’m sure you guys can share with me but there are something I’d rather learn to avoid in a class rather than through my experience.
I’ll keep you updated with what I end up with. Thanks again

I would highly recommend that you buy a boat. As far as possessions go, my boat is by far the favorite. I could not imagine life w/o one:smiley:. That being said, a boating course is a great idea. Also, I would strongly suggest you purchase a book called " Chapman Piloting: Seamanship & Small Boat Handling". It has an endless amount of great boating info. Goes from “what is a boat” to celestial navigation and everything inbetween. I think anyone that owns a boat should have a copy and read it often. If you read that book, I guarantee you will gain a plethora of boating knowledge:wink: Have fun boat shopping! See ya on the H2O!!

Congrats on your new ride, very nice! the world is definitely a more beautiful place when viewed from the water. I always thought our coastal region was amazing but I had no idea how amazing till I started seeing it from the deck of my own boat. By far the best money I’ve ever spent. Been hung up on sand bars, stuck in the mud, caught in storms, lost in the marsh, feasted on by bugs, run out of gas, and almost scared the water out of myself on a couple of occasions [:I] and wouldn’t trade a second of it. Welcome to the adventure Bro. Have fun, be safe.

Last year when i bought my first boat I took a Saturday class with a guy at River’s Edge Marina. It was very informative and i left out of there feeling pretty confident. Nothing will beat on the job training though! In my solid year on the charleston waters, i have found that not many folks out there have bothered to learn basic boating safety!
Full throttle with 2 250 outboards passing folks and taking up the middle of the channel doesnt make you cool,it makes you an A-Hole to the people in the 16’ and below boats out there!!!
I commend you for giving a darn about you and your passengers safety as well as the good folks we share these beautiful waters with.
