I’m interested in reading up on stuff to improve my knowledge. Anyone have any links to any good reading on the topic?

Excellent advice. Local charts also help when the power goes out.
Thanks guys. Just trying to brush up on some stuff, never hurts.

The Chapman’s book I posted a link for should keep you busy for months. It has a wealth of information in it.

Call the US coast guard Aux - They offer free safety classes and courtesy boat safety inspections.
I appreciate you asking. I am astounded weekly by the number of “boaters” who don’t know the basic rules or etiquette. I never thought I’d say this, but DNR needs to be cracking down. I mean holy cow, the ICW between IOP and the Harbor is like 95 and the operators aren’t much better. It’s not like before, when most of us grew up on the water and learned to handle skiffs and jon boats as kids and graduated to CCs and the like… We’re inundated by dudes who never boated but make some money and get some big ass CC w/ twin 250s (which they are never going to fish) and then take it out on the water without knowing any more about running a boat than I know about flying the space shuttle…
Chucky, when you complete one of the authorized online courses, you can usually get a discount on your boat insurance.
Pioneer 222 Sportfish
Yamaha 250
I think BoatUS is the only online course that will get you a discount on insurance but other courses offered by the Coast Guard Aux. will. By the way the Auxiliary has great courses but they are not free.

That area can be quite the cluster when its busy. Recently, almost played bumper boats with an operator that was jamming out to some tunes with the young ladies and his buds on board. He picked up his cell phone to text or change the song or something and took his attention off the helm and did almost a 90 degree turn right in front of me at fast idle speed. Would have hit me if i hadnt been paying attention. Then he yelled at me for “riding up on him,” classic. He didnt even realize he changed course. I then informed him that he shouldnt be checking facebook while boating.

I just ordered one of these. Though I’ve been boating all my life, motorboating for 25+ years, and have taken the SC boating safety course and earned my patch, I figure there is always something new to learn. Heck, if it can give me some insight to protect me from some of the yahoos or give me knowledge I can share with others, it’s worth the price I paid. Thanks for the idea.
