Bodies of Water Where We Have Caught Stripers

Good idea Woody! I’ll start it off…

Murray, Greenwood, Clarks Hill, Jackson Lake(Hampton, Ga), West Point(Ga/Bamma), Cherokee(Tn), Lower Saluda River, and Congaree.

I’m looking forward to trying some more waters in Tennessee and doing some in the salt. Also, Lanier is on my list, and Beaver Lake, Arkansas looks intriguing.

Lake Murray. Lake Greenwood.
Warwick and James Rivers (in my hometown of Newport News, Va.) Up there they call them rockfish and tossing or jigging big bucktails and casting Stretch lures (10"-12") are common techniques.

My list is pretty short. Other than Lake Murray and the Saluda River, the only other place I have caught stripers is on south shore of western Long Island and out at Montauk.

If anyone is ever up in the NYC area I would suggest trying to get in a striper trip for a totally different experience if you have only fished for them in the lakes. Ideally, Montauk is the place to go. It’s a few hours from the city, but well worth the trip if you can pull it off. You can get on a party boat these days and do a night trip for less than $100 with bait (eels) included. Sheepshead Bay in Brooklyn is another option if you are in the city and don’t want to travel.

If anyone is ever up in the NYC/LI area and looking to do some striper fishing, just let me know. My cousin, and now his son as well who captains for owners, mostly do offshore fishing these days, but have been fishing the area for many years and are always up on the latest fishing trends.

They are great people, but I sure wish they would stop sending me crap like this… received last week: LOL

The whoos were 89# and 93#!!..Bigeye was 150#

In order, Lake Arther, Ohio and Allegheny Rivers(hybrids) Pure stipers in Raystown Lake PA, Saluda River, Congaree River, Lake Murray, Clarks Hill, and Hartwell. Raystown is a cold water mountain lake with some real nice fish, not a lot of fish but they are big. Went twice with Lunker guide service and all fish were 15 to 44 pounds. Only allowed 2 per person.

Murray, Congaree, Hartwell, Clark’s Hill, and the Saluda. Planning a trip this winter, I believe its in Jan to Lanier with the SBCC. Super excited to get up there and hope to pick up a 20#+ fish. All the lakes I have fish I have had a 20 or bigger out of. Havent fished the rivers enough to get one yet. Those should be the easiest to accomplish though. Lol

Freshwater - Murray, Tridelphia and Rocky Gorge reservoirs in Maryland.
Saltwater - Chesapeake Bay, Assateague Island, Ocean City Md, Indian River inlet Del, All along the Outer Banks of NC.

Anyone else notice a difference in the taste of fresh vs saltwater stripers? I prefer the taste of saltwater caught. I think it has a lot to do with the brine and the variety of tastier forage they consume like crab and shrimp. IMHO

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…

Never tasted a difference, but maybe that has something to do with the fact that I always eat them deep batter fried with cold beer chasers. Seriously, I can't tell them apart by taste. Maybe grilled or baked it becomes more obvious.

Lake Murray, Lake Wateree, Clarks Hill, Jordan Lake in Raleigh NC, and Lake Gaston in NC. I have never caught one out of a river.

carter. Try fishing behind the wateree dam. I know u go back there a good bit. I have a buddy who does really well back there. Specially after a good rain like this yr. That way u can mark your river fish out the way. .lol

Woody, that’s quite a list. If you had to pick one, what would be your favorite freshwater body of water to fish?

Murray, wateree, pee dee river
Delaware bay and cape cod

I also agree saltwater striper is better, firmer meat and if you bleed them after catching the meat is so white and flakey.

I strongly agree with the “bleed them” tactic. My buddy Dennis, from Wisconsin, taught me this little trick. Just one word of advise, make sure the fish is at least 22"'s before you bleed them, or you may have a case to make with DNR.

Since the title was "where have you “caught” stripers, and not fished for Stipers, it would take too much to post all of the places, so I will list the states alphabetically:

CT
DE
GA
MD
NC
NJ
NY
OK
PA
SC
TN
TX
VA (my 50+ lb’er)

Nobody has mentioned Kerr Lake on NC/VA border. Some people call it ‘Bugs Island’ Lake - This lake is really good in Nov/Dec and is not a bad ride up. It’s just north of Raleigh.

Years ago, I lived in Morristown, TN and I’ll agree that Lk Cherokee fishing is really good at times. Just my $0.02… TE

I have fished lake Gaston which is below Kerr Lake. I think Reality Bites has fished it several times.

Murray, Clark Hill and Cherokee for me. Cherokee in the late fall is my favorite.

I was glad to hear that Steelytom had caught hybrids in the Ohio. When I left there, thirty years ago, you could catch carp and catfish. Shows you what the demise of the steel industry has done for the rivers. I know there have also been other environmental efforts.
