Boga Grips worth the money?

Hey guys i did some favors for a friend and they came over with a $100. gift certificate for cabelas for me since most of its piad for i was thinking of getting a boga grip most of my fishing is done from shore or wadeing flats are they worth the money or should i get the cheap high visibale pair that are plastic any input would be appreciated jcm

get that cast net you’ve always wanted…

then get a minnow trap and minnow bucket.

then get a bunch of tackle.

then get a landing net.

then get a digital camera.

THEN get a boga if you have the $$ left. it’s a fancy way to prove to people on CF.com that the fish weighed what you say it did… that’s worth a lot to some people.

seriously, if you’re on the flats or from shore, the landing net is the most valuable thing to have once the fish is hooked, and the picture would be more important to me than the boga.

I like 'em for bluefish, nice quality, high price, probably wouldn’t buy 'em again. Too much $$$$$

If a dirty bottom slows you down…imagine what it does to your boat!

i would buy a boga again. they are certified scales…meaning you can use them to possibly break a record. worth every dime IF you are trying to tourney fish or after an IGFA record. and, yes…there are better things to spend the $$ on, but if you got it all, and want scales, they are the best out there. 100 bucks isnt alot of cash if you consider the replqcement cost of a rapala scale or similar knock=off every year. bogas last.

The quality of them is impressive. Very solid and they work great. I believe mine will last my lifetime. That said, I wouldnt have bought one for myself (other things I’d spend $100 for first), but it makes a very good present for someone, which is how I got mine. They should sell a float with them, but I made a very good float just out of a swim noodle.

Test the float in shallow water… I know someone who didn’t.

I wanted a good lip gripper, but didn’t care about built in scale, so I got a Berkley for about $20.

You won’t ever regret getting one. They are very well made and will last a lifetime if you don’t lose it.

they are great to have; however, I would recommend buying some type of flotation to attach and also the holder that mounts to the side of your console is nice to have. speaking from experience if it’s not in front of you it is forgotten and never used.

yep. Had the same one for 15 years or better. Would like to get the 60, as the thirty has that pesky problem of bottomming out on the stag reds in the summer and fall.

thats a terrible problem to have…aint it Allen?

A small gatorade bottle makes a good float.

I love the Bogas that I’ve used belonging to other folks, but I didn’t want to spend that kind of money either. Jack brought home to me just last night the Field and Stream version from Dick’s for half of what the Boga costs. Doesn’t have a scale, but weight doesn’t interest me as much as their length. He bought a float as well as I WILL drop it…

Got one for christmas and this is precisely why I got the 30lber (I like the smaller size vs the 60). I’ve only caught 2 reds approaching 30lbs, but we frequently catch em in the teens. I guess if I bottom out the 30, I’ll just have to estimate, and maybe even exaggerate its weight:smiley:. I look forward to that day. Haven’t had a chance to try out my boga yet, but I already like that I won’t have to carry a big-ass net with me. Space is limited as it is.

$100 bucks will buy you lots of useful stuff from Cabelas. I haven’t weighed a fish in a long time. If I want to eat one, I measure it’s length. If I am tournament fishing, I let the guy with the official scale weigh it. I own a lip gripper and NEVER use it. I now just use the Dehooker. I keep the fish in the water and only need that one tool to release the fish from the hook.

Get the Boga.

Buy a cheap tool and sooner or later it will not work, then you spend more money to get the good one.

my dear wife bought me a Boga for Christmas years ago, when they first became available. It has held up very well. Looks like new because I never use it. Put your money/certificate towards a high quality fishing rod. It will help you become a better fisherman. A Boga Grip wont.

Have to agree with P-K. Weighing a fish is, well...

And Bogas don’t cost $100. They start at $125 and go to $250.

$100 bucks will get you a nice camera, now a days. Amazing! And I would much rather see a pretty Low Country picture than a picture of a fish hanging by the lips so I can tell people how much it weighs. Just me. And maybe P-K.

Boga is a very strange product. It’s often promoted as a product that allows you to release a fish without toughing it. But, at the same time, it has the scale function that encourages you to pull the fish completely out of the water and hang it by the lips to see how much it weighs. I don’t have a need for one.

I forgot to say, the best $100 I ever spent at Cabela’s was for a pair of Goretex type pants. They kept my butt drier than a popcorn fart yesterday …
