Need some information about this landing.
Particularly about the water between the landing & the Short Stay area.
Is this area safe to “run” without fear of stumps, shallow water, etc?
How far is it to Short Stay from the landing?
Is this landing “safe” for parking vehicles at night?
Plenty of deep water there, 4 miles or so to the point at Short Stay. I’ve not had any trouble at night in the past, but don’t use it a lot at night, either. Haven’t heard of any major problems there, though.
Like Blackwaterkatz said there is plenty of depth between Bonneau Beach and Shortstay, particularly at the present lake level - HIGH. Watch the depths at the points of Shortstay and if you drift over around Bonneau towards East Dike you need to pay attention. As far as security goes, there is no better PUBLIC landing. A Santee Cooper security guard lives adjacent to the landing, which is surrounded by residential housing that minimizes the hooliganism. Good luck… make sure you file a float plan, particularly at this time of the year. Most exposure deaths occur over the next few months.
That run is very dangerous with a west or north wind. Just use short stay. Pull up, hit 11 on the speaker phone and tell the gaurd that you are there to fish. He’ll tell you to go to the gaurd shack to pay. Third building on the left after the landing. $3 to launch $1 per person. Can’t beat it!
I’m glad you asked this question. Our Boy Scout Troop is scheduled to camp at Camp Moultrie (right near Short Stay) this coming summer and we were thinking of taking our boat up and maybe do a ride through the locks and maybe teach some of the kids to water ski.
On the water ski thing - is it safe to water ski Lake Moultrie around the Short Stay / Bonneau side of the lake?
It is not open to the public as of now.
They usually open it to the public when the lake is low…
