Bonnethead setup

Curious to wether my 8wt setup would be enough to go after some Bonnethead or should I pickup a 10wt or 12wt?

8wt will work but I did get a 10wt to play wiht them… They fight as hard as a redfish and liek to run too

Those things are mainly scent oriented I understand. What flies would one use to target them? Blind casting or for when you see them cruising the banks?

yella bote
black motor

Probably a crab shaped fly soaked in gulp juice would be my guess

a big merkin crab or a big yeller and red seadeucer… I don’t need no gulp…

caught a 15lber on a M4… its tough… they can feel the fly moving and will chase the hell out of it, but its hard for them to connect… but it happens every once in a while…

I’d guess a big fat orange or red fly. Deerhair head and a lot of flash, something to push some water

I started adding a 4 mill. glass rattle to my shark flies this year and found my follow/eat #s increase dramaticaly. Big wad of bright orange EP fibers tied tarpon style, with about 3" wire = backing visitation.

Bonnet heads are alot different than other sharks… The big “shark” flies don’t really work well… However a blue crab pattern with a rattle will do the job… hint hint…

I agree with MM. go smaller shrimp and crab pattern with rattle and a faster retrieve has produced more strikes for me. catch plenty poling flats stalking reds in late spring-late fall.

I think everyone of you guys are being plenty of help. Giving me well more than what I was asking for, I feel like I could go get a bonnethead with the fly rod tied behind my back. Thanks for everything.

“with the fly rod tied behind my back”… I’ve seen you cast so thats not too much of a stretch  hahahahahahahahahahahaaha

This thread has really gotten me jacked up to target bonnetheads next time I’ve got the opportunity. Do you all target them on the flats or open water as well? I understand there are a bunch of them in the harbor, especially around Sumter. Anybody blind cast for them?
