bonnethead

how big is a “big” bhead? mine measured 25 on a boga. never seen one like that

I caught a 55 inch a few weeks ago

ooops - should have clarified… bogas measure pounds, not lengths of measure

State record is 27lbs 11oz so if your boga is close you had a good one.

yea, but the world record is only 26-lbs so YES a 25 pounder is a very good one. you must submit and pay a fee to IGFA for a world record.

bonnetheads in the surf at all? i keep tossing out blue crab at sullivans but the only thing hitting its pinfish. they hang out in the surf zone, closer to rocks, or where should i look for em?

OhioNavy. If you don’t have a boat, try the backside of Sullivan’s at the old Pitt Street bridge. Crab and live bait can produce big bass and shark. Don’t throw out too far as both species are cruising near the shoreline. Good luck, george.

I agree with close to shore. We caught the biggest bonnetheads by throwing a lie out in less than 3’ water. Largest was 17lbs on a boga grip

thanks…guess walking out chest deep and launching as far as i can was the wrong answer then!

Well sometimes that tactic works well if there happens to be a sandbar further out that you are, or are not, aware of. I’ve had a few times that I got lucky and found such things that aren’t all that easily spotted because they are behind the breakers in water deep enough that the waves don’t whitecap when they go over it, but still enough of a sandbar that it’s a viable fish attracting structure.

Bonnets are bottom feeders and eat crutations.and crabs, you’ll find them more on the flats and shallows in the same places as Reds eating the same thing as Reds

Ohio, if youre targeting bonnetheads youre right on with the blue crabs.Theyre pretty easy to catch from a boat but if youre stuck on land this summer you can try from the end of Sullivans Island so youre facing the harbor. You can basically cast into the grillage and shipping channel from the beach. Theres alot of bonnetheads and atlantic sharpnose that cruise through that area not to mention huge redfish. If youre using thirty pound or heavier mono with a circle hook you dont need to worry about a wire leader on the bonnetheads. Most of the time I can land them on mono without them chewing through it.

Don’t forget, bonnetheads love big shrimp also, but crab is great also. In the surf its not always needed to throw it as far as you can, its more about the placement if your bait on the bottom terrain. But you know that with that awesome redfish you got Easter!! And when u Bonnetfished at my spot we were catching at the mouth of a nice flat, and I’ve seen them cruising the bank with there fins out the water while catching bait and redfishing. Another surf spot you could try is capt Sandy inlet on kiawah, although I think a kayak would be better for placing baits. Or the stono inlet walking the opposite end if kiawah towards folly, big sharks in there, and reds, ladyfish, bluefish ext

This is definitely a silly question… But, I’m clueless. So, it seems like anywhere in the area, you are likely to get a Bonnethead on your line at some point. So get ready for it…

How do you go about unhooking it once you have landed it. I would imagine that a 55" shark might have some teeth to stay away from… Pliers? Or is there something else that I’m not aware of? If someone could be kind enough to offer some advice, and I’m sure a good jab… It would be much appreciated.

Just cut the hook and be done

cutting the line is 1 option and by all means do it if you dont feel comfortable unhooking a shark by hand, but can can also just unhook them the same as any other toothy fish like walleye, gar, bluefish, … if the hook is visible which with circle hooks most of the time it will be, once you get control of the shark just grab the hook with pliers and take it out. bonnetheads and sharpnose do have teeth but not too big, but blacktiips, duskies, lemons, … will require an extra heads up. that being said as of now my hands been shredded worse by a flounder than a shark…but getting stung by a spiny dogfish does suck!

this fish was off the waterway at bulls island. it was one of the best fight i’d ever had on relatively lt. tackle. swore it was a red until my parter netted at the boat.

NavyNuke. Thanks! I figured what was the drill. I just didn’t want to be the “guy” that lost a frickin hand because he was too obnoxious to ask a simple question. Thanks again!
