Bonnethead

Chased them the last two mornings down around Beaufort. 12 total and not a single hit using bright yellow and orange EP baitfish. all in ankle deep water. I know they’re a tough one to fool, but Someone has to have the secret to them.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>My money is on YOU. You are putting in the effort and that ALWAYS gets my attention. I have planned to fish small sharks on the fly a few times but only got as far as tying some ‘sharkey’ looking flies.

If you have had 12 shots at Bonnetheads and no joy, I can only suggest switching the plan completely each time. Small fly slow retrieve, big fly fast retrieve, splash, no splash, red, black, white etc…

No matter what, please don’t put ‘crab juice’ on your flies out of desperation.

Funny you say that. A guy was hooking up with them a little down the beach drowning shrimp. He finally walked up to me and asked if I wanted to squirt some shrimp juice on the fly to see if it would work.

Bonnethead can be tough… Not because they’re picky, but because of their anatomy. Their eyes are on the side of their heads, therefore when they get on top of your fly, they can’t see it… this is why they use their nose alot to feed… without scent or a heartbeat for the electrical sensors on his nose to pick up on, the shark is gonna have a tough time getting the fly in his mouth…

Now don’t go running off to soak your flies in gulp juice just yet… don’t be that guy.

I’ve caught them on the fly, as have others. Use a big profile fly, something like a seaducer that will push water… they can feel it moving, and therefore track it down better… also, never stop moving the fly… if he turns on it, you keep it moving till you feel it come tight… if the fly stops moving, he will loose his ability to track it…

Also, be patient… they have to swing at it a few times usually to get it in their grill… you just gotta keep it moving, and keep cool.

have fun…

Use two watch batteries as eyes.

A long long slow walk in the spartina gives you time to think big thoughts and put your mind back into order.

Bought a big tandem hooked fly for throwing at dolphin offshore, but haven’t got to use it. So walked down the beach and looked for sharks. It’s a big giant of a fly, but the ones I put it in front of ate it up. Like MM said, keep it moving and make sure it has a big profile so they can track it once they get over it.

Keep the fly moving but not to fast. Keep it in there feeding zone.

That’s genius, Jerms. Gotta come up with a great name for that fly…

x2 on Mad’s advice. Try to use a fly that’ll “push” some water around. Maybe a Toad, or a big headed “rag-head” style fly. Have used these when targeting black drum, and they’ve worked well.

EP(black/red tied tarpon style)baits will work…St Simons is eat up w/ b-heads. Just got back from a little family time and had some follows/hook-ups(only 2 landed). Had to wade DEEP to get to a series of bars 30 yds off beach and sight cast(no camera or phone, just leaders, pliers & flies). My first experience w/ these guys.

Used a clear int. line and 50# seaguar bite tippet(didn’t feel like buying any wire down there and that was the heaviest I had)
