Some of the local kayak fishing folks made the trip down to Pensacola this past weekend to fish and camp at the “Boondoggle”. Most of the weekend was spent fishing the Big Lagoon, with it’s many grass-flat areas. We saw a lot of bait and a good number of fish. I caught a few trout, but didn’t get on the reds like I wanted to.
During the Friday trip, I was casting around a school of bait at the edge of one grass flat, when I got a surprise with my very first Spanish Mackerel…I caught it on a Z-man curly-tail plastic rigged up on a weighted hook.
The best trip was on Sunday, when we launched into the gulf from the beach at Perdido Key. The water was very clear…kayaking near the beach was like being in a swimming pool with the bottom visible. I was trolling cigar minnows for Spanish - and had good results! Caught around three, and lost a nice one at the kayak…
