bottom bouncing today

Well it was a banner day. Ocean was a little bumpier than I thought it would be. Went out with my friend and his Dad for some BSB at the Charleston 60. Activity for the day: One Anchor w/ 100ft. of line. A couple of short BSB, one spot tail. Went to another piece and bent my spare anchor…Great!!! Called it a day! Not my best day out. It can only get better from here right? Anyone know where I can get a wreck anchor? These bottom trips are getting expensive. Hope someone caught out there? Catch um up…Mike

go see Chris V at Charleston Marine, he has them

I know you catch the rocks sometimes but you should try to always anchor in the sand so you don’t tear up the reef.

Reef anchor and a polyball will save the day sometimes…and your back too.

…because everything is a conspiracy!!!

Make one.

ARE YOU SERIOUS??? You were with us when we went to DC! Now you are going to side with PEW on protect the coral? Why not get a solar powered boat so that the diesel fumes don’t pollute the ocean, or use sail power instead of depleting fossil fuels? After the damage the trawlers did in the 80’s with roller ball nets (promoted by DNR), you can’t be serious about what a few wreck hooks will do. I can see Holly Binns copying and pasting this to her next news letter “local fisherman wants to stop using anchors on reefs” Rant over…

Dang sells…

I try to anchor in sand if at all possible myself…

It makes positioning and repositioning easier, and saves gear- - for me. But that’s just preference. Some spots, u can’t get in the sand without having too much or too little scope out so you need a grapple. Some places, the hook is going to get twisted up no matter what, and the grapple can be straightened out easier (talking about light anchors on our little boats). Some places, there isn’t enough relief for a grapple to hold either unless it’s calm enough to fish with no anchor at all. And if the only bit of relief is where you need your baits, then you’ve got to be able to hook in the sand.

Good idea to have both kinds of anchors if you can.

FYI- Prohibition of any fishing gear that damages the bottom is actually coming soon.
Coral is too important to society to risk any damage to it- even when growing on hard substrate our tax dollars paid for, right?
This way, we catch even fewer fish, and the catch data will look like there are less fish out there.
Clearly, we are overfishing everything and must be saved from ourselves. (Sarcasm)

Roller ball fishing was not done over wrecks that would have torn up our nets. We were out in 50 fathom curve pulling over the sand on each ledge.

Local Boy, Just having fun.

Didn’t mean to start any arguing! I did try to set up anchor in the sand I guess the wind and waves dragged me into the structure. Didn’t mean to harm the reef… Instead I added to it. LOL! On a lighter note when will the fish start to show up on the Charleston 60 and areas around it? I need to catch some fish!!! Catch um up…MIke

Ha Ha…lay off the Red Bull…Is’nt the Charleston 60 manmade?? Maybe he"s saying don’t eff up what our tax dollars paid for.

You guys get fired up way to easy. No offense taken Sells…It is usually a good idea to anchor in the sand, for your anchor’s sake and for the reef’s sake. I did go on the bus to DC and continue to fight for fisherman’s rights but I will also continue to be a good steward of the ocean and the resources it provides for all of us. You get fined in places like FL if you anchor in a reef. If your anchor is dragging you don’t have enough chain. I use at least as much chain as the length of the boat. And yes bottom trawling is super harmful to all the soft coral out there off our coast. What is good about soft corals is they grow very fast and can recover from damage, unlike the hard corals in more tropical waters where it is illegal to anchor in a reef.

Please let us all make sure we take all this passion which leads to anger and ranting, I support it all, and email and write our senators and congressman. You guys spend and awful lot of time on this site and I hope you all have at least written letters to all of SC’s politicians.

if half the people on this site knew what the ocean looked like when u were 100ft down, you would be much more educated about how many fish are there, how much fishing garbage is found, and how pretty the reef that we (as a community) are slowly but surely destroying for good---- thats why I waited 3 yrs of reading the non sense ignorant posting and comments on this site from people who claim to know everything before actually becoming a member…an YES the anchor always harms the reef
