went south to 80’-100’. caught bsb’s, b-liners, and all the usual suspects. had some hits on the big live baits but we couldn’t stay hooked up unless it was a donkey. acres of bonitas chasing micro flyers. awesome ocean. fun had by all.
This is for the last pic, pull boy pull.

Hey we were out there 10/3 and 10/4, the ocean was as flat as I’ve seen in a while. Bait fish all around, awesome indeed. Ended up with a big gag grouper, dozen or so triggers, and lost a lot of bait on the way down due to those aggrevating amberjacks. They were all over the place
Glad you guys did well.
Sheagreed you neded a pair of glasses! Like we are going to put up a pic of undersized fish. All 40 were over the limit, get over it!
JWS, what kind and size hooks are you using with those live baits? With a 1 lb B-liner, we like to use an Owner 10/0 or 12/0 circle. Don’t worry about using a hook that is to big, because even a small grouper can handle that size hook. Small circles will tear out instead of setting in the jaw bone.
sheagreed…wrong, all look over 12" (look at the juice bottles)

I notice a “Ringtail” in the mix.
I asked this question some time back and never got an answer: Do you eat the Ringtails or is it just for bait?
We use them for cutbait but have never tried to eat one.
Not trying to be smarta$$ or anything, just want to know.
We caught some huge ones last year but threw them all back.
Thanks
they are very good to eat, similar to other porgys. big bones, flakey white meat. worse bait stealer than triggers.

CaptDan was putting down the livies. I know he was using a j-hook just not sure what size.
Sells,
I only had 8-10/0 j-hooks and two 10/0 short shank live bait hooks (not sure of the brand as they had been hidden in the box, but they were a tarnished gold color) The two mystery hooks held good but last minute rigging error cost me one and the 80lb fluro broke at the top of the leader on the second one. What size leader are you using with the circle hooks? I will definately be prepared for the next trip. Thanks for the advise
150 lb fluro, and the smallest circle I use is a 10/0 Owner.

thanks. I will definately upsize both my leader and circle hooks.
Question, Had 2 BIG grouper ( I BELIEVE ) hookups this weekend. Using 100 lb test doubled over at hook and 30 or 40 lb on the reel, had drag at full staff but couldn’t stop them from running in the rocks…would get them up initially about 5-10 cranks then they would run…within 1 minute I’m stuck in the wreck…I was using Sells technique of putting the ruby lip or baby b-liner “ON THE BOTTOM”… I know in Florida we usually would keep them about 5 or so cranks off…
Any suggestions would be helpful for the next trip out

top shot your reels with 100 yards of 100lb braid(no stretch)i only use a 3 ft leader(anywhere from 80lb to 400lb mono or floro)…
you only have a few secs to stop them, mono stretches to much to keep him out of the rocks…
p.s. its illegal to use undersized fish for bait,i would edit your post…
If you had a typical sized grouper off the bottom 5-10 cranks, and he ran back to the bottom, I might would tell you it was not a grouper. A grouper usually fights hardest before you get 5-10 cranks when he is on that kind of structure. A big snapper or AJ on the other hand may let you get 5-10 cranks and then make a hard run. Try stronger reels and stronger line if you’re going to fish next to big structure like that. 80-130# braid, 100# mono topshot, and at least 100# leader with crimps. Use a cigarette lighter on the end of the tag end of the line coming out of your crimps to make them where the line can’t pull through the crimp. And use only 4x and 8x strong quality hooks like owner and gamakatsu. With this kind of set up, a typical grouper cannot break you off with the right technique unless he gets your leader into rocks or a wreck. Your tackle busting will not be the reason you lose them, so you’ll be one step closer to getting them in the boat.
