The grouper remains elusive to me. How in the world does one keep a live bait or big chunk of live bait close to the bottom long enough for a grouper to bite without catching a shark? went out of murrells inlet 2 weeks ago in about 100 feet of water and caught 4 sharks around 100 pounds and about 100 about 4 pounds. Is it best to just leave an area when that many are around? Plenty of beeliners, BSBs and other assorted bottom fish, just no grouper and tons of sharks, pesky really, even the big ones. Any idea of the best depth to target during this month?
Thanks all.
Persistence. Good bottom. Live bait anchored up.
If there are abundant sharks, we relocate.

If you are catching that many sharks you are probably in the sand next to the live bottom. Anchoring technique is essential in catching Grouper, they will not stray far from cover ie. Sharks in the sand. Sometimes you just have to move.
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
I feel your pain driver. But with me its either a shark or huge AJ! Still waiting for my first legal grouper in my own boat.

I seem to do much much better with the grouper when I hit 150-180 feet of water. I’m sure it has to do with the area I fish, but the ratio of sharks to grouper is way better for me there.
