Haven’t done a whole lot of bottom fishing offshore before, what kind of rigs do you use for bottom fishing? Anyone going this Saturday?

Thanks, do you do anything special to make your Chicken Rigs? or just make three loops, and put a pyramid weight on the bottom? What size weight. what type hooks, and what size.
What kind of bait do you use?
Sorry for all the questions, all I really do is troll and haven’t really done any bottom fishing.

Four loops; one for the weight, two for hooks, and one to attach to the mainline with a snap swivel. We start with 8 oz. bank sinkers, if that doesn’t hold on the bottom, add another 8 oz to it or switch it out to a 16 oz. For bait, we take a little squid to get started then cut up any trash fish we catch after that. Smaller circle hooks for triggers and vermillion, larger ones for black sea bass.

What Long Enuff said.
What long enuf said exactly. I like to use size 1 Owner hooks myself. They’ve stronger and usually have larger eye to pass line thru. I also use 8oz bank sinkers. I use only small hooks on my rigs. You can catch triggers to grouper on the same hook.

Big knot head Black sea bass have a huge mouth and will suck in a bait almost half of their body size, hence the larger hook and larger bait for them. Of course this also means you will catch more of our illustrious sharp nose sharks as well.

Thank you for all of the info, I really appreciate it. Last question, what locations do you normally fish? Going with my GF’s father tomorrow, and any advice would be great to help him put some fish in the boat. He doesn’t get offshore much, so he is pretty excited.

These artificial reefs would be a good start, the deeper you go the larger the fish. A " Maps Unique" is an excellent source of information also it shows live bottom areas that usually hold fish. They are available at your local tackle shops, or online.

Thanks for the help, guess we are going to try Y-73 or the Gardens.

It is going to be a little bumpy. Hope you are in a decent size boat.

You’re going to be miserable in any boat on anchor and it’s going to be a very bumpy wet ride unless you’re on a big big boat

i wouldnt hesitate to try inshore because offshore doesn’t look pleasant for small boats tomorrow. Use magicseaweed, reefcast, and anynumber of other weather sites to check before you go
Ended up not going today, called it early this morning. Was really looking forward to giving it a try.

For a bottom rig, you basically need monofilament, hook(s), and a weight… I won’t give you any suggestions on how to tie it or configure it because it really doesn’t matter. If you can tie a hook and a weight on a line, then you can catch a bottom fish.
Florida what sz1 hook are using ??
I don’t know of any sz1 Circle Hooks that are strong enough for grouper …
Just wondering.
Thanks man

I generally try to use only Owner hooks. Locally in Columbia it’s hard to find the stronger circle hooks in small sizes with eyes big enough to pass double 100lb mono thru.

I made a good bit of Chicken rigs with 80lbs mono, then I used double loop knots for the weight, two hooks, and swivel clip at the top. Gonna use 12oz bank sinkers at the bottom, and sz6 circle hooks.
How does this setup sound?

For targeting grouper, I use a heavy duty 10/0 circle hook with crimped 200lb mono.

Clem, those 80lb rigs will work fine for most bottom critters.
