Bottom Fishing University (plus some top dwellers)

Well, well, well…

I was happy to welcome sellsfish and his son on the boat today. As I am somewhat new to saltwater fishing, sells and I had discussed a little bottom fishing clinic, and he made an entire Masters Program of it. Lets see, we started around 6:15 putting some nice livies in the well and headed out on the big pond (it was like a pond). Ran out at 28-30kts, slowed up to find <2’@10secs and started searching for some good bottom. Found a few good areas so we set up for a quick drift and pulled up a fattie of a grouper. Sells says, “Lets drop anchor and start pulling fish” and that must have been the secret code word for the fish, because, BAM, we were on 'em. Trigger, grouper, b-liners, BSB and the kicker to this is as we pulled up the bottom dwellers, we did some “Al Gore fuel efficient trolling” and landed some dolphin and kings. High point of first spot for me was the biggest fish I ever landed, a MONSTER AJ. I know, AJ, but this was not a reef donkey, it was more the size of a Clydesdale. Everyone can chime in their weight guesses… Fished spot #1 till the fish flew a white flag and requested we relocate. Being good stewards of the sea and wanting a different look at the ocean, we picked up moved a bit and started hurting them again. Our limiting factor, STORAGE. We had the fish boxes filled to the top and when closing shop for the day…What shows? Another king. What a fun time, great crew and a learning experience. Made only about 20kt average back in due to it being like a washing machine and starting to stack up. Sells is a heck of a professor and his son is a working fool that is all about putting fish in the boat (read as beating his Dad). Thanks guys for the great fishing and look forward to doing it again soon.

Sells will be posting pics and maybe correcting my count, but here it goes…

1 - AJ
1 - Chicken
2 - Kings
7 - Dolphin
14 - Grouper
Limits of Triggers and B-liners
Some BSB and other bottom dwellers met their maker today too…

What a blast!

Sounds good. What depth were you getting them in? And were you anchored when you caught the dolphin?

I want to know what your secret is for triggerfish. They are hands down my favorite, but I have never caught them in that large of a quantity. I think that on online seminar is necessary. Now you have a trigger to demonstrate filleting with. Great catch guys.

Very nice! Have fun with all those triggers. That is one of my favorite eating fish. Hope Sells showed you some tricks to cleaning those kevlar coated pescados.

I love that up close and personal picture of the green head BSB.

EDIT: HAHA, I just saw Sells’ triggerfish cleaning tutorial.

They will tear up some bait. I imagine those nasty teeth are not too comfortable. When you take 'em off the hook you could hear them snap their teeth together. Mean bas+ard$!

Nice pile of triggers and grunts you got there.* I like the way you spread those broomtails out to cover the trash. Pro pic takin’ there.

The strawberry’s look so sweet when they are baby’s.

Honestly I am surprised that 5500 has a single tooth left on any gear.

Good eats.

Those are “Graysbe’s” not scrawberries…know your fish ID.
I swear your vision has ■■■■ the bed old man! you call an 850 a 550, see a pile of trashfish, and on the trigger cleaning thread, you see a serated knife, when it is a 6" boning knife.

Paul,

I went back and looked at the pic, and I guess it was a mistake letting a BIG BSB lay on top of that trashy Chicken (someday you will learn).

I cant hold a pen today because my forearms burn everytime I try so I think I will just post, look at the pics and study up for my exams.

The other class that was co-instructed by our First Mate, was “Proper Poly-Ball Use - Keeping your First Mate(manual windlass) happy”. I already bought the rig.

I’m sorry your hands hurt…pitty!

My wife always knows how well a trip went, by how bad my hands hurt. We can’t wait to do it again. the mighty mite / poly ball combo is the only way to fly!..I should get a commision from them.
