got out on Mon. with my crew of 3 headed out to Y-73 found a good spot and loaded up with a nice 4man limit of sea bass and a couple of nice beeliners Robert caught a couple of false albies and some other fish on a jig. was checked at the jetties and at the ramp by DNR make sure you’re legit! There was a question about the beeliners out of season, glad they radioed in to check. that would have been an expensive trip! until next time catch um up…Mike
So DNR didn’t know beeliners were open yr round?
I’ve had plenty of times where the warden checking me was not educated enough to id my bottom fish and a few times when they couldnt id my ducks I harvested. Dang shame. The vast majority of wardens are awesome people who are very educated about their jobs… but there are at least 1 guy and 1 gal who have no business being on the force in my opinion. I keep a fish id chart in my offshore bag and bird id book in my blind bag now along with a copy of current rules and regs (state and SAFMC)
CaptDan is right. I’ve had DNR break out the ticket book and tell me that seabass had to be 14". That same person also didn’t know what plenty of the mixed bag of bottom fish species we had were. We got it all sorted out but it took way longer than it should.

I’ve had the exact thing happen to me coming back from duck hunting. Not only did she take up entirely too much of my time looking at her pamphlet to determine what species I had and what laws she could issue a ticket for, but actually caught an attitude when I attempted to help her with what species she was looking at. She was concerned that I had over the limit of hens with my three hen greenwinged teal.
This all transpired while I was on one side of a busy double ramp that she blocked both of to keep me from pulling into the parking lot.
DNR reps operating with such perceived immunity like that are unacceptable and should be sanctioned!!
Yep…had em pull out the fish ID charts on me at the landing after a day of bottomfishing. I also had one years ago call a ringneck a black duck. Also had one swear that the spinning fish leaping at the mouth of the Sampit in Georgetown were tarpon. I told him that his tarpon were sturgeon, but he didn’t believe me. Very impressive.
Nice job on the fish.
I had an experience about 10 years ago with a warden that was checking for a plug in my gun and was putting the shells in backwards ( I actually had to load it for him and show him the plug was in it). It was a standard Remington 1100. I do agree with Dan most are very knowledgeable and do a good job, but there are always a few in any profession it doesn’t matter what it is.

those big wiskery sturgeon get massive in the bay… its crazy you never hear of anyone false hooking them or purposely trying to catch one.
i have yet to be checked by dnr but it always in the back of my mind. but since i wasn’t looked at this year im sure every week i have a rod on the boat this year they will find me and want to talk.
There are some great DNR guys working lake Murray now. Thank goodness one of the not-so-great ones retired a few years back. He was as aggravating as anyone I’ve ever met. Went to my 80 something year old neighbors home to get his son for a fishing violation. Got this old man all upset. Had the back door covered. Then checked the address and found out he was at the wrong home. Old neighbors son lived in Florida at the time! He wasn’t even in the state!
I think this guy made DNR officer of the year a couple of years after that. Unbelievable! He obviously didn’t train the nice guys we have working lake Murray now. They don’t cut you any slack, but atleast they are sensible, efficient and polite while doing their job.
Here is a funny one for you. My father has become friends with the DNR guy that patrols around his farm in Kershaw county. We took him on a bottom fishing bonanza in August. We were killing tons of giant bee liners. I pull in a stud ARS…What I consider a stud around here anyway (fish the gulf a lot)…Prolly 8 lbs. I vent him, and toss him back, and I thought the guy was going to cry. He thought it was a state record B liner…Too funny. We explained the SAMFC to him and such.

SAFMC has a great phone app that is updated frequently and has current limits, restrictions, fish id, etc etc on it. You don’t need cell service to access the app so it is a great tool offshore, and I use it all the time out there. Don’t understand why law enforcement doesn’t have this at their fingertips.
