Okay, this will probably sound like a noob question.
I am looking at buying a Sea Pro 176CC. After running it today, we took it out of the water (fresh), and I noticed that it appears to have been bottom painted. Looked like a gray coating, but it had a white, chalky layer over it that came off on my hand like wet white paint.
Is this a normal “oxidation” result? Or something i should be concerned about?
Thanks!
Boat is a 2006 model, by the way, and I would be the third owner. Not much info on the first owner’s use…

Ablative bottom paint is meant to come off like you noticed. It must be repainted occassionally.
This type of paint is very hard to get off the hull entirely and have plain gelcoat of your boat visable.
Another concern is possible hull damage that could have been roughly repaired and easily concealed with a coat of ablative bottom paint.
Inspect under deck thouroughly (stick a digi cam with flash down thru any inspection or access hatches to take shots of the inside of the hull below deck if possible. Look for excessive water in the bilge when you’ve got the boat in the water.
I bought my boat with bottom paint on it, and I have hated the bottom paint with every ounce of my being because I trailer the boat and getting the bottom paint off is nothing like anyone has ever hoped. Always harder or more costly…
My boat had bottom paint on it…ablative. I just roughed it up which took off the chalky part (of course wearing a face mask so I wouldn’t breathe the dust) and just painted over it with Rustoleum Marine (non bottom) Paint. My boat is a trailered so I don’t see the need for bottom paint plus I have lots more colors to pick from and it’s much better looking.
Wallygator,
How long ago did you do that?
Will the Rustoleum marine be durable enough to last when covering bottom paint?
I was always of the opinion that the alblative paint had to be removed.
