Bottom paint ?

anyone have any idea how much it may cost to remove bottom paint and rework gel coat on a 28’ hull?

why not leave the bottom paint on?

don’t want it, doesn’t look good and leaving it on a lift

they have most any color paint you want now. even white which may be good depending on your hull color. if you have it on a lift it will probably be alot cheaper to just paint it again rather than have someone sand off the existing paint, sand the bottom and then probably have to put another layer of gel coat on.

I would like to get the gel coat back on, I have heard if you don’t leave the boat in water with bottom paint on it, the paint will “dry” up on you and start looking bad???
If its around 1,000 to 1,500 I would rather just redo the gel coat?

check with the technical folks at Micron CSC. my understanding is that it is formulated to do ok being out of the water. not sure if it is ok to be out all the time or not.

thx

Elaborating on what Bullfrog said: My understanding is that once it’s bottom painted, it’s borderline impossible to go back to straight gelcoat. I’m relying on the following hearsay lore:

  1. You can paint over gelcoat, but you can’t gelcoat over paint.
  2. To apply bottom paint, they usually “rough up” the gelcoat on the bottom, so to completely remove all traces of bottom paint so to as where gelcoate will adhere, you have to bacially scrape/blast/sand away all the gelcoat, re prep, re apply, and re finish.

I know some folks that just had the bottom paint superficially removed and the bottom re-painted with non-antifouling paint that matches the hull. That’ll probaly achieve what you’re looking for…

thx rebel that seems like a cheaper fix?

If you know what paint was used before you can possibly sand and recoat. If not 1 coat seahawk 1277 high build primer and 2 coats seahawk 33 or cukote both are hard and made to go in and out of water. Call Stuart(843-568-7527)he is the most reasonable I’ve found for a professional job.
