bottom rigs with single strand*help*

i do mostly jetty fishing

i had stuck to the mono thing as long as i could… i went as big as 150lb mono still got cut off…

i do realize sharks were my cause…

so i stepped up to a #8 single strand titanium with a 2x 9/0 circle vmc hook… it has a slightly bigger gap than my eagle claw 7/0 (different company different specs i know)

so ive been doing haywire twists this weekend getting stuff ready for whever i can get out next…

the question is… i tend to do single drop bottom rigs… should i stick to this with the single strand or should i reconsider my setups for the single strand.

what do you guys use.? any recommendations?

You probably don’t need the titanium wire, the more affordable stainless steel single strand works pretty well.

I prefer to use a carolina rig if I am able to anchor upstream and let the line go straight out the back of the boat. That way I’m not having to cast it a half mile, and it’s easy/quick to rig up.

If I’m having to cast across the current, I’ll skip the carolina rig because the sinker tends to slide way up the line when casting with heavy bait. Sinker goes one way, bait goes the other. So, either I’ll just peg the sinker in place with a toothpick, or I’ll use the 3-way swivel. Also does a good job of keeping the bait down toward the bottom.

I put my sinker on the 3-way swivel with only 6-12" of low-weight mono. If my main line is 20-30lb, then I’ll use 10lb for my sinker line. That way, if the sinker snags, you only break the sinker line and not the main line and lose everything.

I’ve always used really long leaders (over 24" usually) but from what I’ve read from a lot of folks here, that’s totally unnecessary. I’ll let someone else answer that one.
